Rookie teammate Razgatlioglu (22nd, 4pts) has barely fared better, while test rider Augusto Fernandez (21st, 4pts) has scored more in two rounds than Miller has in six.

Factory rider Alex Rins – already told he’s not being retained for 2027 – has nine points to sit 19th, while 2022 MotoGP champion Fabio Quartararo has been Yamaha’s only shining light, the Frenchman managing 37 points and a season-best fifth in last Sunday’s Catalan GP to sit 13th in the standings ahead of his reported, but unconfirmed, switch to Honda next year.

Does Miller’s points contribution, added to the rule changes set for 2027 that will have rookies on a more level playing field than normal with everything being new for everyone, outweigh his developmental contribution behind the scenes as Yamaha attempts to bridge the gap from doormat to decent?

If the Guevara news is to be believed – and paddock speculation has swirled that Miller was told at the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez in late April that he was surplus to requirements at Yamaha for next year – what happens next?

Is there space on the grid elsewhere for 2027?

Might Miller have to leave MotoGP and head to World Superbikes if he wants to continue racing rather than accept a test rider role?

And might the first visit of the Australian Grand Prix to Adelaide in 2027 go ahead without a local rider on the grid, a prospect that would be unpalatable to the sport’s promoters after moving the Australian round of the series away from the much-loved Phillip Island?

These are the five questions that need answering if the end of Miller’s time at Yamaha has more wide-reaching consequences.

Miller finished in the points for just the second time all season in Barcelona on Sunday. You work your arse off all week, all off-season, you have some goals set in your mind, and then you understand that it’s difficult to achieve them,” Miller said at Jerez.

“But what are you going to do, go home? I’ll continue to do so until the end, wherever that goes will be well and truly out of my hands. I’ll do what I can do on a motorcycle.”

Miller has become increasingly frustrated with his results as Yamaha’s straight-line speed deficit bites. Yamaha and Honda appear full, and both Aprilia and Ducati have plenty of alternatives to fill a maximum of three seats.

As well as Vinales and Bastianini, fellow veterans Rins, Ducati’s Franco Morbidelli and KTM stalwart Brad Binder are without confirmed rides for 2027, while Marini – like Miller, an astute technical mind – will be in demand should he not land a place at VR46.

The depth of riders who could be on the outer – every one of those names mentioned above has won a premier-class Grand Prix besides Marini – illustrates the uphill battle Miller faces.

WILL MILLER STILL RACE?

Would a MotoGP test rider role satisfy Miller as he progresses towards his mid-30s, following a path trodden by former full-timers Dani Pedrosa (KTM), Alex Espargaro (Honda), Pol Espargaro (KTM) and Takaaki Nakagami (Honda) in recent years?

As recently as the Le Mans round in early May, he wasn’t prepared to accept sitting out. At the end of the day, I enjoy racing motorcycles.”

With the game of MotoGP musical chairs reaching its conclusion, Miller’s determination to continue racing might necessitate a shift.

Should VR46 sign Bulega, for example, a prime World Superbikes ride with a dominant Ducati manufacturer – Bulega has won 15 straight races this season as he romps to a near-certain title – would be a logical landing place for Miller, who has retained strong ties with Ducati after riding for the Italian manufacturer in MotoGP from 2018-22.

Other Superbike teams would be lining up for a rider who comes with a profile, pedigree and a fan base the production-bike series could undoubtedly benefit from.

Miller’s showmanship would be a huge asset for World Superbikes should his MotoGP days come to a close (Pramac Racing Ltd)Source: Supplied

It’s not Miller’s preferred route despite his enjoyment of the series, but it’s one he may need to explore more seriously than last year, when he confirmed upon re-signing for Pramac for 2026 that a future outside MotoGP had been a consideration.

“[I had offers for] very competitive machinery in other championships,” he said in Barcelona last September.

“I love Superbikes, I thoroughly enjoy watching Superbikes, but it’s not a MotoGP bike. It doesn’t go as fast, stop as good, you can’t even begin to list the things a MotoGP bike does because you’ll be here all day. There’s something about riding these monsters against these lunatics that I enjoy.”

WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN FOR SENNA AGIUS?

Ever since the advent of the MotoGP era in 2002, there’s been at least one Australian rider on the grid every year.

Would a possible Miller exit be a hindrance or a help for rising Australian Moto2 rider Senna Agius, who has won four intermediate-class Grands Prix in the past 12 months and has his sights set on a move to the top flight?

Agius, fourth in this year’s Moto2 standings and ahead of likely MotoGP graduates Alonso and Holgado, has made no secret of his desire to move up. The 20-year-old’s management has been in contract with several teams, and the most plausible landing spot is a seat with Tech3, run by ex-F1 team boss Steiner.

Agius has pushed his claims for a MotoGP promotion with two wins in the opening six Moto2 races this year. (Photo by JORGE GUERRERO / AFP)Source: AFP

With 15 of this year’s 22 full-time riders hailing from either Spain or Italy – the two countries combine to host six of the 22 Grands Prix – losing Miller, and potentially South African Binder, doesn’t do much for the perception held among many fans that MotoGP’s diversity for a world championship can be questioned, the series already without a single rider from the US or UK.

Of the line-ups all-but confirmed as mentioned above, all three Ducati teams, plus the factory teams for Aprilia and KTM, will sport all-Spanish/Italian line-ups next year.

Nationality will likely play less of a part in an Agius graduation as it did for Miller in his early Moto3 days, where his family, struggling to cope with the costs associated with keeping their son on the ladder to MotoGP, accepted some financial help from the series promoters keen to find the next Australian to follow in the footsteps of Casey Stoner, who abruptly retired at the age of 27 in 2012 after winning two MotoGP titles.

But then there’s the Adelaide factor.

MotoGP’s move to Adelaide – a potential first step into a new direction for the series as it dips a toe into the concept of bringing the sport to the public on street tracks adjacent to a major population centre – comes at the expense of the revered Phillip Island track, where the remote location, outdated facilities and capricious weather have been tolerated for a track layout that’s, at worst, a top-two circuit on the calendar.

Adelaide will need a local face for the race, a spokesperson for the sport, and an ambassador for a move that will take some time to sink in and be accepted by fans, be they local or international, rusted-on or newbies.

It’s not the only reason to employ Agius if Miller’s MotoGP career really is on its last lap. But it’s not nothing, either.

And it’s one that, for all of Agius’ clear ability and upside, will surely play a part if, this time, Miller can’t prolong his career into a 12th premier-class season.

At several junctures in the past few years, Jack Miller’s MotoGP career prospects looked to be somewhere between…

[572
2620,328836,2095,64,39401,63,131169,146912,136758,166459,937,328816,263487,22777,328839,166463,293673,26426,262577,46233,16267,2057,16230,94269,37227,152513,12370,7607,2105,49514,14211,3552,16200,327827,328826,272698,328829,2328,3555,9398,328821,41544,328831,1136,16201,328820,4280,10732,328815,16268,142956,806,805,803,804,328825,6909,2041,2067,3583,49517,99980,10734,328818,81550,328830,247260,146914,84718,12022,122761,13147,283277,328817,328834,328822,254343,328828,37214,163497,16205,38760,22295,328823,37224,3595,2020,328837,328832,328819,85,328838,328827,328824,13773,41546,51357,328833,152530,80067,328835,3370,23899,120819,3586,2614,20420,2086,3561,9020
post-681836","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-motosport","tag-agence-france-presse","tag-all-spanish-italian-line-ups","tag-america","tag-au","tag-augusto-fernandez","tag-australia","tag-australian-grand","tag-australian-rider","tag-australian-round","tag-austrian-manufacturer","tag-barcelona","tag-career-hanging","tag-career-prospects","tag-championship-leader","tag-chaos-race","tag-cops-penalty","tag-dani-holgado","tag-dani-pedrosa","tag-david-alonso","tag-davide-brivio","tag-engine-project","tag-europe","tag-fabio-quartararo","tag-factory-rider","tag-factory-team","tag-factory-teams","tag-fermin-aldeguer","tag-francesco-bagnaia","tag-getty-images-inc","tag-gp-getty-images","tag-grands-prix","tag-guenther-steiner","tag-honda-motor-company","tag-horror-crashalex","tag-intermediate-class-team","tag-italian-manufacturer","tag-italian-teammate","tag-italy","tag-jack-miller","tag-joan-mir","tag-jorge-martin-fuming","tag-liberty-media-corporation","tag-line-ups-all-but","tag-looks-set","tag-ltd","tag-madcap-opening-laps","tag-marc-marquez","tag-marco-bezzecchi","tag-massive-crashes-cause","tag-matt-clayton","tag-millers-inc","tag-motor","tag-motor-sports","tag-motosport","tag-motosports","tag-musical-chairs","tag-nicolo-bulega","tag-north-america","tag-northern-america","tag-northern-europe","tag-paddock-speculation","tag-pecking-order","tag-pedro-acosta","tag-plausible-landing-spot","tag-podium-finishes","tag-points-contribution","tag-population-centre","tag-premier-class-season","tag-production-bike-series","tag-province-of-barcelona","tag-race-report","tag-raul-fernandez","tag-regulation-revolution","tag-remote-location","tag-report-read","tag-reporter-german","tag-revenue-pie","tag-ride-height-devices","tag-rider-market","tag-rookie-teammate","tag-rule-changes","tag-rumour-mill","tag-series-leader","tag-series-promoters","tag-sits-dead-last","tag-southern-europe","tag-spain","tag-spaniard-wins-closest-ever","tag-spanish-press","tag-speed-deficit-bites","tag-sports","tag-straight-line-grunt-relative","tag-straight-line-speed-deficit","tag-street-tracks-adjacent","tag-team-principal","tag-team-run","tag-team-standings","tag-teammates-squander-points","tag-test-rider","tag-test-rider-role","tag-testing-side","tag-texas","tag-toprak-razgatlioglu","tag-track-layout","tag-united-kingdom","tag-united-states-of-america","tag-valentino-rossi","tag-world-championship","tag-yamaha","tag-young-gun
["GET
