\n\tStephen Colbert<\/a> is saying goodbye to late-night as The Late Show<\/a> ends its run on CBS<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe comedian will complete an 11-year tenure on Thursday, May 21, and ahead of the finale, he teased what audiences can expect.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWith The Colbert Report, I knew how I wanted it to end because, well, I picked the date,\u201d Colbert said in an interview with People<\/a> about ending his Comedy Central show.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe continued, \u201cI remember I went to my assistant Amy Cole and I said, \u2018Amy, what\u2019s the last day of 2014 in production?\u2019 And she said, \u2018Oh, it\u2019s December 18.\u2019 I said, \u2018Oh, good to know.\u2019 I went down, and I sat at my desk, and I thought for a second, and I thought of the entire show. I was like, \u2018Oh, okay. That\u2019s what it\u2019ll be.\u2019 It kind of all came in one. We rewrote and noodled and everything, but I had the idea.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tColbert chose the finale date for The Colbert Report. However, the end date for The Late Show was not of his choosing, which made things different for the comedian.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis time, you know, wasn\u2019t my choice, wasn\u2019t my date. I think that\u2019s why it didn\u2019t come all at once,\u201d he said. \u201cOne or two elements came to me like, \u2018What about this? What about that?\u2019 And then we\u2019ve had meetings over the last few months.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tColbert said that recently \u201cit all just gelled,\u201d and although he had \u201cnot written\u201d his last episode when the interview took place and posted on May 19, he knew what he wanted, adding, \u201cAnd luckily, it looks like it\u2019s going to [happen].\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs the end date neared, Colbert said, \u201cIt\u2019s getting much realer \u2014 every moment\u2019s getting a little more precious. I tried never to take for granted being in the Ed Sullivan [Theater], having a Broadway theater, having that tremendous audience, or having the ability to work with the funniest people I know every day and make jokes about the things that make me most anxious every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBut at the same time, you can\u2019t really dwell on that ending because you don\u2019t have time for it. Any more than you can think about walking and still walk, or swallowing and not choke on your own tongue.
