This masthead understands Devils wingman Hugh McCallum underwent scans on his knee on Thursday morning after suffering the injury while playing school footy for Guildford Young College earlier this week.

The Clarence product, who will turn 18 in August, has emerged as one of the state’s leading players in the Talent League this season with his ability to play a variety of roles.

McCallum has taken his game to another level in 29026 averaging 22.9 disposals and 1.3 goals per game through the first nine games.

He has caught the eye as one of the Talent League’s best distributors by foot.

McCallum is the brother of former Port Adelaide draftee Tom and son of AFL Tasmania Hall of Famer Scott.

Earlier this month, Kevin Sheehan rated McCallum in his early top-15 prospects ahead of the AFL Draft in November.

“An athletic wingman or high half forward who is both courageous and committed, McCullum first came onto the radar at the under-16 national championships in 2024,” his biography read.

“He averaged 18.7 disposals at 73 per cent efficiency to finish as one of Tasmania’s best players at that tournament. McCallum continued his progression as a bottom-age player in the Talent League last year, averaging 14.7 disposals, 4.1 marks and 2.7 tackles from nine matches for Tasmania.

“His ability to spread from contest was another asset and he was at his best in a round 18 match against Oakleigh, gathering 25 disposals and eight marks.”

AFL Tasmania did not comment when contacted.
