{"id":685292,"date":"2026-05-21T14:12:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T14:12:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/685292\/"},"modified":"2026-05-21T14:12:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T14:12:09","slug":"prep-talk-carson-highs-tatum-brothers-are-rising-cricket-players","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/685292\/","title":{"rendered":"Prep talk: Carson High&#8217;s Tatum brothers are rising cricket players"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Walking around the campus at Carson High are the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/citypridemagazine.com\/help-comptons-tatum-brothers-shine-abroad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tatum brothers<\/a>, Johnny and Johnathon, and they\u2019re potential stars in a surprising sport:<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cricket\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> cricket.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>If people don\u2019t understand what sport that is, no surprise. Their mom wondered, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mom was not skeptical but confused,\u201d Johnny said when he first started learning cricket years ago. \u201cShe thought I was playing with insects. She thought it was a bug.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sport involves a bat and ball between two teams of 11 players on a field. There\u2019s a 22-yard pitch and involves two wickets on each side and scoring runs. Australia has been the most successful country in the sport.<\/p>\n<p>Cricket will be reintroduced at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Both brothers would love to make the USA team. They\u2019re leaving this summer for England to play in an international tournament for 15- to 18-year-olds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something new and helps me explore the world,\u201d Johnny said.<\/p>\n<p>The brothers are 16 and 18. Johnny is a 6-foot-1, 160-pound senior. Johnathon is a 5-6, 165-pound sophomore.<\/p>\n<p>Johnny said he went to a park near his grandmother\u2018s house years ago to play basketball and \u201csaw people doing something curious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was cricket. Few have been playing the sport in the United States for as long as the Tatum brothers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to know the game and have the IQ like basketball and football,\u201d Johnny said.<\/p>\n<p>The brothers practice at a cricket field in Compton.
