Many don&#8217;t taste at all &#8220;fishy&#8221; points out Valerie Agyeman, RD, a women\u2019s health dietitian and founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flourishheights.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"http:\/\/www.flourishheights.com\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Flourish Heights\" data-node-id=\"8.1\" class=\"body-link css-7v8mn9 emevuu60\" target=\"_blank\">Flourish Heights<\/a> virtual nutritional counselling service. Incorporating a mild fish into pasta, pizza or tacos can open picky eater&#8217;s minds. &#8220;I find that adding seafood to favourite foods is always a great idea,&#8221; says Agyeman.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">And it&#8217;s worth experimenting, because fish \u201cis packed with vitamins and nutrients that can lower blood pressure and help reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatrightpro.org\/media\/meet-our-spokespeople\/spokespeople\/grace-derocha\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.eatrightpro.org\/media\/meet-our-spokespeople\/spokespeople\/grace-derocha\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Grace Derocha\" data-node-id=\"12.1\" class=\"body-link css-7v8mn9 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Grace Derocha<\/a>, a national spokesperson for The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. These include omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins D and riboflavin, calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and potassium. Most types of commonly sold fish are healthy to eat a few times a week, however. &#8220;It\u2019s always best to look for sustainable seafood certifications, including MSC to ensure a safe, healthy and accountable seafood supply,\u201d says Agyeman. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/pregnancy\/keeping-well\/foods-to-avoid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/pregnancy\/keeping-well\/foods-to-avoid\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"NHS\" data-node-id=\"23.0.1\" class=\"body-link css-7v8mn9 emevuu60\">NHS<\/a> says women who are or might become pregnant should avoid: <\/p>\n<p>swordfishmarlinsharkraw shellfishcold-smoked or cured fish (for example smoked salmon or gravlax, including in sushi), unless it has been cooked until steaming hot.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Inspired? In general, bigger varieties (of any fish) contain more, and when it comes to tuna, that means going easy on yellowfin, ahi tuna and albacore. \u201cInstead, opt for smaller species like the skipjack, which is the chunky tuna in a can,\u201d she says.<br data-node-id=\"42.1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>3. It\u2019s a good source of selenium, phosphorus, magnesium, and vitamins B6 and B12. <\/p>\n<p>6. UNAGI (A.K.A. EEL)<img draggable=\"true\" alt=\"healthiest fish to eat unagi\" title=\"healthiest fish to eat UNAGI\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2125\" height=\"1416\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;width:100%;height:auto;\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/unadon-royalty-free-image-1632241461.jpg\" class=\"css-0 e1g79fud0\"\/><\/p>\n<p>DigiPub\/\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"66\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Unagi is much-loved in Japan, and loaded with vitamins and minerals, protein and other key nutrients. \u201cUnagi is also believed to have the highest amount of unsaturated fatty acids than any other sea creature &#8211; the omega-3 fatty acid in unagi could help improve blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and help maintain bone health,\u201d says Derocha. \u201cThis and vitamin A are believed to reduce wrinkles and keep the skin supple as well.\u201d Look for Japanese unagi, specifically.<\/p>\n<p>7. Oysters are not for beginners, but the salty, slimy slurp is a treat that have regulars racing to the raw bar. \u201cOysters contain a rich amount of zinc, which supports your body\u2019s ability to fight off colds, viruses, and other bugs that make you sick,\u201d says Agyeman. Or try cooking them, says Derocha, perhaps in a stew. They are also great for the environment. \u201cThe shells are an excellent source of calcium, which when used in the garden can help build strong plant barks as well as balance the soil pH,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>8. Okay, it is not a fish so much as a crustacean, but &#8220;prawns are high in protein and it has a light flavour that kids and adults can enjoy any time of day,\u201d says Agyeman. \u201cIt\u2019s also a great source of iodine and selenium, which supports a healthy thyroid and proper metabolism.\u201d While not as high in omega-3 fatty acids as some other choices, they are low in mercury and calories and high in protein. <\/p>\n<p>10. Once shucked (which is how scallops are usually sold), they are simple to prepare, says Derocha. \u201cJust be careful not to overcook them, which is easy to do &#8211; all it takes is a quick sear in a super-hot pan for them to be cooked to perfection.\u201d Low in mercury, they\u2019re ranked as sustainable in a variety of wild and farmed varieties, she adds. They&#8217;re also a good option for picky eaters, says Agyeman.  <\/p>\n<p>11. Derocha agrees. \u201cOne of the best benefits of clams is that their proteins provide several essential amino acids. These are amino acids that the human body cannot make, and therefore must be obtained from dietary sources. A serving of clams provides over 100 % of the recommended daily intake of 11 different amino acids,\u201d including all nine essential ones. <\/p>\n<p>12. As far as sustainability goes, crab is a \u201cbest choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>13.
