Get Me to the Church on Time, sang Alfred Doolittle<\/a> in the musical My Fair Lady. But for Donald Trump<\/a>, attending a wedding is not simple \u2013 even when it\u2019s that of his son.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, the US president admitted that he might skip Donald Trump Jr<\/a>\u2019s nuptials, reportedly taking place in the Bahamas<\/a> over the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019d like me to go, but it\u2019s going to be just a small little private affair, and I\u2019m going to try and make it,\u201d Trump, sounding decidedly unenthusiastic, told a gathering of reporters<\/a> in the Oval Office.<\/p>\n

His excuse? A full in-tray, notably his war of choice in Iran. \u201cI\u2019m in the midst \u2013 I said: \u2018You know, this is not good timing for me. I have a thing called Iran and other things.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The conflagration in the Middle East has not prevented Trump from attending an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event in Miami and a PGA tour championship at his golf club in Doral, Florida, nor stopped him from playing several rounds of golf himself.<\/p>\n

Don Jr, 48, is the president\u2019s eldest child. His first wedding<\/a>, to fashion model Vanessa Haydon in 2005, was held at Trump\u2019s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, and was officiated by Trump\u2019s sister, Judge Maryanne Trump Barry. The marriage produced five children.<\/p>\n

Don Jr got engaged to Kimberly Guilfoyle in 2020, but ended the relationship in 2024; Guilfoyle is now the US ambassador to Greece. Don Jr\u2019s latest fiancee is Bettina Anderson<\/a>, a 39-year-old socialite and model from a prominent banking family in Palm Beach.<\/p>\n

They made their debut public appearance as a couple at Trump\u2019s inauguration in January last year. But it does not appear they were tempted to follow the example of Tricia Nixon, daughter of Richard Nixon, who married<\/a> in the White House Rose Garden in 1971.<\/p>\n

As for Trump, he has been losing his political touch in recent weeks. Opinion polls<\/a> show his approval rating at an all-time low. Asked recently if the economic impact of the Iran war was motivating him to reach a deal, he proclaimed<\/a>: \u201cI don\u2019t think about Americans\u2019 financial situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

But even the president seems to understand that partying the night away in the Bahamas<\/a> might be a bad look when millions of Americans are feeling the pain of rising gas prices and food costs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s one I can\u2019t win on,\u201d Trump mused. \u201cIf I do attend, I get killed. If I don\u2019t attend, I get killed \u2013 by the fake news, of course, I\u2019m talking about. No, but he\u2019s got a very \u2013 a person who I\u2019ve known for a long time, and hopefully they\u2019re going to have a great marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not that anyone is keeping score, but Trump was very present at his daughter Ivanka\u2019s wedding to Jared Kushner<\/a> at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, in 2009. \u201cIvanka and Jared\u2019s wedding was spectacular, and they make a beautiful couple,\u201d he wrote<\/a> on what was then Twitter. \u201cI\u2019m a very proud father.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Get Me to the Church on Time, sang Alfred Doolittle in the musical My Fair Lady.
