{"id":687115,"date":"2026-05-22T10:28:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T10:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/687115\/"},"modified":"2026-05-22T10:28:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T10:28:11","slug":"joan-mir-questions-strange-catalunya-motogp-tyre-pressure-penalty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/687115\/","title":{"rendered":"Joan Mir questions \u201cstrange\u201d Catalunya MotoGP tyre pressure penalty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Joan Mir revealed that a \u201ctiny\u201d tyre pressure infringement cost Honda it\u2019s first MotoGP podium of the season, in Catalunya.<\/p>\n<p>The Spaniard spent much of the restarted race in second, briefly lost the position to eventual winner Fabio di Giannantonio before reclaiming the runner-up spot from long-time leader Pedro Acosta in the closing laps.<\/p>\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/motogp\/racer\/911973\/joan-mir\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mir <\/a>was then among six riders placed under investigation for low tyre pressure.<\/p>\n<p>The HRC rider was the highest-placed of the five riders to receive 16-second post-race penalties, with only Pecco Bagnaia escaping sanction due to a leaking wheel rim.<\/p>\n<p>Mir later said that he had missed the required percentage of laps above the minimum pressure by a \u201csuper tiny\u201d margin.<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe championship points care!\u201d he quipped when asked how he feels about the penalty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I don&#8217;t really care because I made a super great ride and I gave 100%.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/gng_1316597_hires_1600x900.jpg\"   type=\"image\/jpeg\" alt=\"Joan Mir, 2026 Catalan MotoGP. \" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.78\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Joan Mir, 2026 Catalan MotoGP.<\/p>\n<p> \u00a9\u00a0Gold and Goose<\/p>\n<p>  Sprint distance, long race penalty &#8220;strange&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, Mir did highlight that the shortened 12-lap grand prix the same distance as the Saturday Sprint.<\/p>\n<p>If Mir and the other riders punished on Sunday had failed to achieve the required 30% of laps above the minimum pressure on Saturday, they would only have faced an eight-second penalty.<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only thing that was strange for me was the penalty, because we made like a Sprint race, and I got the penalty of a long race!\u201d Mir said.<\/p>\n<p>That effectively meant a harsher punishment since riders were closer together at the chequered flag than they would have been over the planned 24-lap grand prix distance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe [gap] compared to the other riders is bigger in a full race. So, probably in a full race, I would have been eighth or ninth [after the tyre pressure penalty].\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now I\u2019m 13th!
