Sunrisers Hyderabad opener Travis Head was not named for the Pakistan ODIs for the same reason.

The Kings, last year’s IPL finalists, were seemingly destined to qualify for the knockouts after winning their first six games, the highlight being a record-breaking run chase against the Delhi Capitals, reeling in a 265-run target with seven balls to spare. They were top of the standings on May 6, a few days before Australia announced its ODI squads.

However, Ponting’s Kings have since suffered six consecutive defeats, with their finals dream in serious jeopardy after slipping to fifth on the ladder. They will now need to defeat the Lucknow Super Giants at Ekana Cricket Stadium on Saturday evening for any chance of qualifying for the IPL knockouts.

But the franchise is also relying on other results; if the Rajasthan Royals defeat Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, Punjab’s season will be over.

BBL lines up India opening match | 00:50

Meanwhile, Australian all-rounder Cameron Green was picked for the Pakistan tour after his franchise, the Kolkata Knight Riders, started their IPL season with five straight losses, sitting ninth on the standings on May 6.

But the Knight Riders have dramatically turned things around during the second half of the season, winning six of their seven most recent matches to give themselves a glimmer of hope of qualifying for the finals.

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad have booked their place in the playoffs, with the Kings, Royals and Knight Riders in a three-horse race for the final spot.

If Punjab and Rajasthan lose both of their matches this weekend, Kolkata will progress to the knockouts provided they defeat the Delhi Capitals on Sunday evening. In such a scenario, Green would need to be withdrawn from Australia’s ODI tour of Pakistan, potentially replaced by one of the Kings players that were initially omitted.

As first reported by CODE Sports earlier this week, the Australian selectors have kept the door open for last-minute changes to the ODI squad pending how the final stages of the IPL pan out.

Elsewhere, the Chennai Super Kings have been eliminated from the IPL having finished their season with three consecutive losses, meaning Australian Matt Short won’t need to be withdrawn from the Pakistan tour, which at one stage also loomed as a possibility.

Cummins fires Sunrisers to IPL finals | 01:31

IPL LADDER

1.
