Knowing when to keep your mouth shut is a skill, one that not everyone possesses.<\/p>\n
A wife who had spent months nursing her sick dog<\/a> through chemotherapy, cooking him homemade meals, and attending bi-weekly vet appointments largely on her own quietly hoped her husband would acknowledge her effort on Mother\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n He did not. He went to the internet to find out if he was in the wrong.<\/p>\n Keep reading for the full story.<\/p>\n I (36M) and my wife (32F) have been married for 4 years now.<\/p>\n Before this year, she never expected a Mother\u2019s Day gift from me, as we don\u2019t have children due to infertility issues \u2014 but after dinner she had a full-blown meltdown and now won\u2019t talk to me.<\/p>\n Turns out, the subject of having children is a sore subject for her \u2014 and understandably so.<\/p>\n A little background: my wife and I don\u2019t have any children of our own because of fertility issues \u2014 she has endometriosis.<\/p>\n After trying for a year, she decided having kids wasn\u2019t a huge deal as long as we had pets, so I surprised her with a puppy.<\/p>\n I never cared for pets, but my wife grew up with dogs her whole life and her family gets pretty crazy about them.<\/p>\n As far as this family is concerned, these pets are basically family.<\/p>\n For example, her parents throw their dog a birthday party every year and invite their extended family and their dogs to their house for a huge celebration with cake (both human and dog), balloons, party hats \u2014 the whole nine yards.<\/p>\n But then tragedy struck.<\/p>\n Anyways, this past year our dog Rambo was diagnosed with lymphoma.<\/p>\n Due to his age (3 years), my wife pushed for us to do chemo, even though we don\u2019t have pet insurance.<\/p>\n I told her if that\u2019s what she wanted to do, then she had to cover all of his vet bills, and because my job is so demanding, she had to take time off to take him to his appointments.<\/p>\n The dog\u2019s health has continued to be a source of conflict in their relationship.<\/p>\n These past few months she\u2019s been a little extreme about him.<\/p>\n Taking him to his bi-weekly appointments, cooking him homemade meals, literally sitting on the floor spoon-feeding him \u2014 she spends all of her time, energy, and money on this dog.<\/p>\n Well, after dinner today she seemed more quiet than usual.<\/p>\n So finally, the conflict between them came to a head.<\/p>\n I asked her if I did something to upset her, and instead of talking to me, she went and sat on our kitchen floor next to Rambo, talking about how I don\u2019t appreciate what \u201cmommy does.\u201d<\/p>\n I told her to stop referring to herself as \u201cMommy\u201d because it\u2019s weird and he\u2019s just a dog.<\/p>\n That set her off, and she went on a tangent about how she\u2019s been nursing this dog back to health and all I had to do was get her some flowers or cook her dinner \u2014 something to acknowledge her effort.<\/p>\n He soon realizes the two aren\u2019t even close to being on the same page.<\/p>\n I couldn\u2019t believe what she was saying \u2014 all this over a dog?<\/p>\n So I kindly reminded her that she\u2019s the one who wanted to do chemo and waste all of her money and time on him.<\/p>\n She called me a jerk and locked herself and the dog in our guest room, and now she won\u2019t speak to me.<\/p>\n I hate going to bed angry, but I don\u2019t think I can do anything to get her to talk to me.<\/p>\n Now he\u2019s wondering if he\u2019s gone about this the wrong way.<\/p>\n Should I have bit my tongue and got her flowers?<\/p>\n If she is considering herself a \u201cdog mom,\u201d then why didn\u2019t she act like this the past 3 years we\u2019ve had Rambo?<\/p>\n In my mind, Mother\u2019s Day is for real moms \u2014 so AITA?<\/p>\n Never Miss a Story<\/p>\n Sign up to get our BEST stories of the week straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n Guess he\u2019s sleeping in the doghouse tonight.<\/p>\n If you enjoyed this story, check out this post<\/a> about a woman\u2019s family who is trying to stop her from moving away for her husband\u2019s job.<\/p>\n What did Reddit think?<\/p>\n This commenter thinks this guy is clearly in the wrong, but not for the reasons he thinks.<\/p>\n This guy may not even fully understand why his wife is so upset in the first place.<\/p>\n This is about so much more than \u201cjust a dog.\u201d<\/p>\n This user seems annoyed that this guy just isn\u2019t catching the hint.<\/p>\n Redditors seemed to understand what this husband clearly didn\u2019t: there are multiple ways to be a mother.
