That came after Darcy Moore suffered another hamstring injury in the first half.

The Eagles kept pace with the hosts in the first half, before surging again in the second half after it earlier looked as if they were falling away.

Having led by 10 points at half-time, Collingwood kicked four of the first five goals in the third quarter, prompting Dees great Garry Lyon to remark on Fox Footy: “You get the feeling the party has started here at the MCG.”

But in another swing, Andrew McQualter’s spirited Eagles booted three-straight majors of their own to go into the final change down just 11 points.

West Coast challenged again in the fourth quarter — with Jobe Shanahan goaling at the 30-minute mark to ensure nothing would come easy — but the Pies stood tall in defence without their skipper.

THE 3-2-1 (what we learned) …

3. MOVE OVER PENDLES. DAICOS MASTERCLASS STEALS SPOTLIGHT

While it was Scott Pendlebury’s milestone day, Nick Daicos quickly stole the limelight.

Daicos produced another masterclass performance with 34 disposals, three goals, 14 score involvements and 576 metres gained.

The Pies superstar split his time between the midfield and forward, while West Coast No. 1 draft pick Willem Duursma was at times given the big matchup on him.

And Daicos was simply on another level to anyone at the MCG and largely the difference between the two sides on the night.

It included a dazzling fourth-quarter dagger that caused the MCG to erupt in a huge moment.

“He’s the difference out there right now,” Melbourne great Garry Lyon said of Daicos after his goal in the second quarter.

“There are some talented footballers out there, but none are playing at his level.

“He’s playing at this level up here … as Willem Dursma gets a bit more of a lesson on how much room you can afford a superstar.

“Every time he gets it, something good happens.

“Nine score involvements, the next best is four. He touches it, Collingwood score.

“He’s playing a different game right now.”

With it, Daicos continued his dominant form against West Coast after polling eight of a possible nine Brownlow votes in the clubs’ last three games.

You sense the 2026 Brownlow favourite might’ve just made it 11 of a possible 12 in front of the capacity crowd.

“He’s such a driven competitor, isn’t he?,” Kangaroos champion David King said at half-time.

“He would want to play a big game in Scott Pendlebury’s milestone match.

“He’s always there. He’s always around the action; he’s hard to clamp.

“21 disposals in a half is huge. Nine score involvements in a half is something very rarely done – I’ve only seen it done half a dozen times for the year in first halves – such is the scope of his game.”

2. ‘WHY NOT US?’ UNWAVERING EAGLES STAND UP TWICE AS ‘DYNAMIC’ BIG MAN LIFTS

West Coast wasn’t overawed by Saturday’s monumental occasion, despite the 90,000-strong Collingwood crowd.

Andrew McQualter’s Eagles matched the Pies’ energy for the majority of the first half, with ruckman Bailey Williams playing a big part.

Challenging counterpart Darcy Cameron with his ability to push forward and impact, Williams was also highly impactful at the contest.

By half-time, he had 13 disposals, six clearances, three contested marks and a goal.

“He’s looked really dynamic,” triple premiership star Jack Riewoldt said on Fox Footy at half-time.

“His ability to push forward is challenging Darcy Cameron. You look at the way he’s possessing the ball, he’s had 11 contested possessions to go along with six clearances.”

Harvey Johnston kicked the Eagles’ first goal of the second quarter at the 14-minute mark – putting West Coast in front by two points – in a tasty “glimpse” into what the young Eagles can offer.

“That’s the glimpse into the future that you want – you get your strong contest, then some run, some carry, some break-the-line … and then they’re forward of the ball,” Garry Lyon said.

“That’s been the buzz around the Eagles after their win against GWS last week, and it’s a good look at it right there.”

The clubs then traded blows, with Nick Daicos goaling before Jake Waterman answered with a set shot to put the underdogs back in front. The Eagles trailed by 10 points at the main change.

After conceding five of the first six goals in the third quarter, the Eagles looked like “toast” — but there was fight in them yet, kicking three-straight goals of their own to get the margin back to 11 points at three-quarter-time.

“They’ve been up for the fight – you thought halfway through the third quarter that they were gone, they were toast,” Jack Riewoldt said at three-quarter-time.

“They were absolutely out of it; Elliott just kicked a goal to make it 29 points, but they fought their way back into it.

“Last week is all they’ve got to look back to – they were able to run over the top of the Giants, and it was built around their pressure and Harley Reid.

“Can they do it again? … He (McQualter) would be saying: ‘Why not us? Why not us on the biggest occasion? Why can’t we be the ones to spoil the party?’”

And they admirably pushed again, with Jobe Shanahan’s late second goal of the night setting up a tight finish to ensure nothing came easy on Pendlebury’s big day.

1. DOUBLE PIES BLOW DAMPENS PIES PARTY

A double injury blow to Jamie Elliott and Darcy Moore has dampened Scott Pendlebury’s milestone celebrations.

Elliott landed awkwardly in a marking contest in the dying minutes of his game and clutched at his knee in agony.

It led to fiery scenes for reasons that aren’t clear, as basically every player got tangled up in a big scuffle next to a floored Elliott.

The 33-year-old was eventually stretchered from the ground in worrying scenes.

Meanwhile, Moore sustained the injury in the second quarter after in a ruck contest that ended his day early.

It continues a tough injury run for Moore, who’s been limited to three games this year after being plagued by repeated soft tissue problems.

“It’s a big out. Obviously, the captain of the football club,” Tigers champion Jack Riewoldt said on Fox Footy at half-time.

“He got himself up for today, but he’s been in and out. Another injury on top of an injury he had, it compounds.”

Moore had played just two games since Round 3 as the 30-year-old’s body keeps breaking down like it did earlier in his career.

Given his repeated setbacks in 2026, Kangaroos legend David King questioned if he should’ve been played in the ruck.

“I think it’ll be a story (around) should he be playing ruck?,” King posed.

“I can’t remember seeing him in the ruck for some time.”

Triple-premiership player Cameron Mooney voiced similar concerns during the call.

“As the great Denis Pagan always used to say, you don’t use a Ferrari to plough a field,” Mooney said.

“Not sure why Darcy was in there so that’s going to be a talking point during the week.”

Three-time Coleman medallist Jason Dunstall added: “It doesn’t necessarily mean it happened because he was in the ruck.

“It’s just unusual for a man that has struggled with injury. It’s a shame. It’s a shame for Darcy Moore.”

The Pies went into the game undersized after ruck Oscar Steene’s ACL injury denied them from their two-ruck setup they’ve deployed for much of this season.

Moore effectively replaced Jack Buller as a tall and they went smaller in attack.

But Moore is now due for another stint on the sidelines ahead of Collingwood’s upcoming clashes with the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne ahead of its bye.

Follow Collingwood vs West Coast in our live blog below!

If you can’t see the blog, tap here.

Collingwood has celebrated Scott Pendlebury’s record-breaking 433rd match with a win on Saturday, though it had to repeatedly…

[560
638,64,63,689,55,639,10133,1127,2105,6462,142568,647,12002,677,3247,19083,85,660,7067
post-689287","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-afl","tag-afl","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-australia-and-new-zealand","tag-australian-football-league","tag-australianfootballleague","tag-collingwood-magpies","tag-fox-footy","tag-getty-images-inc","tag-live-updates","tag-match-details","tag-melbourne","tag-newcastle-united-football-club","tag-oceania","tag-robert-cianflone","tag-scott-pendlebury","tag-sports","tag-victoria","tag-west-coast-eagles
["GET
