{"id":690529,"date":"2026-05-24T01:01:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-24T01:01:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/690529\/"},"modified":"2026-05-24T01:01:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-24T01:01:10","slug":"dick-parry-saxophonist-and-pink-floyd-collaborator-dies-aged-83","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/690529\/","title":{"rendered":"Dick Parry, saxophonist and Pink Floyd collaborator, dies aged 83"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dick Parry, the\u00a0saxophonist best known for his work with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/pink-floyd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pink Floyd<\/a>, has died at the age of 83.<\/p>\n<p>The news was confirmed by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/david-gilmour\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Gilmour<\/a>\u00a0yesterday (May 22), who shared a touching tribute to his longtime friend and collaborator on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dear friend Dick Parry died this morning,\u201d Gilmour wrote. \u201cSince I was seventeen, I have played in bands with Dick on saxophone, including Pink Floyd. His feel and tone make his saxophone playing unmistakable, a signature of enormous beauty that is known to millions and is such a big part of songs such as \u2018Shine On You Crazy Diamond\u2019,\u00a0\u2018Wish You Were Here\u2019, \u2018Us And Them\u2019 and \u2018Money\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No cause of death has yet been publicly confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>In a career that saw him play rock, blues and jazz, Parry is best remembered for lending his distinctive saxophone parts to some of Pink Floyd\u2019s most celebrated recordings, with his solos on\u00a0\u2018Money\u2019 from 1973\u2019s \u2018The Dark Side Of The Moon\u2019 and \u2018Shine On You Crazy Diamond\u2019 from 1975\u2019s \u2018Wish You Were Here\u2019 ranking\u00a0among the most famous instances of saxophone\u00a0in classic rock.<\/p>\n<p>Born in\u00a0Kentford,\u00a0Suffolk\u00a0in 1942, Parry first met Gilmour\u00a0as a teenager, with the pair playing together in local bands\u00a0around Cambridge, with\u00a0GIlmour\u00a0later joining Pink Floyd in 1967 shortly before the departure of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Syd_Barrett\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Syd Barrett<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As well as his studio contributions to Pink Floyd records, Parry also became a regular presence at their live shows in the \u201870s. Nearly two decades later, he reunited with the Gilmour-led version of the band for 1994\u2019s \u2018The Division Bell\u2019 world tour, also contributing to \u2018Wearing The Inside Out\u2019 from that album.<\/p>\n<p>Gilmour added in his tribute: \u201cHe played in the last band I had that included Rick Wright for the \u2018On\u00a0An\u00a0Island\u2019 tour and at Live 8 with Pink Floyd\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Outside of Pink Floyd, Parry also recorded and performed with artists including Rory Gallagher, John Entwistle and Lightnin\u2019 Slim, carrying with him a highly respected reputation as a session saxophonist.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Dick Parry, the\u00a0saxophonist best known for his work with\u00a0Pink Floyd, has died at the age of 83.
