Pies spring late surprise for Pendles party in EPIC scenes<\/a><\/p>\nThrough it all, Pendlebury has been the absolute constant across De Goey\u2019s 12 seasons in the AFL. <\/p>\n
But again, it hasn\u2019t always been so rosy. <\/p>\n
There have certainly been rockier times for De Goey after off-field slip ups and sombre meetings with the club including long-time skipper Pendlebury.<\/p>\n
Even in those hard times, however, Pendlebury was always in De Goey\u2019s corner.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s just a special person in general, he\u2019ll always have your back,\u201d De Goey told foxfooty.com.au in the rooms after Saturday\u2019s win over West Coast.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom the start of my career, all the way up until now, he\u2019s been a mentor for me, someone who\u2019s supported me and cared for me the whole journey. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m super grateful to have him in my life and I\u2019m super stoked to get to share this milestone with him.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had a few meetings, unfortunately, back in the day. But he was the first to support me and backed me to the hilt.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Magpies celebrated Pendlebury\u2019s milestone in style in a 10-point win over the Eagles that went down to the wire.<\/p>\n
Beyond the game itself, the tributes for the milestone man went far and wide.<\/p>\n
They included all Collingwood players \u2014 not just Pendlebury \u2014 wearing gold numbers on their commemorative guernseys.<\/p>\n
The idea was driven by Pendlebury in a late surprise his teammates including De Goey \u201chad no idea\u201d about.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was pretty special. Felt like you were a part of it,\u201d De Goey added.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s just what sort of bloke he is, he\u2019s a selfless bloke and wants everyone to be by his side wearing the same stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n
And while there was plenty of backlash towards the Pendlebury celebrations, De Goey said the players \u201cdidn\u2019t think about it too much\u201d and simply wanted to honour the Collingwood champ.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s amazing to see 90,000 cheering for one particular player. I found that so special,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s been an absolute trooper of the footy club for so many years and been such a great role model. <\/p>\n
\u201cTo go out and get the four points for him is exactly what he deserved.\u201d<\/p>\n
So, how much longer can the 38-year old\u2019s longstanding, decorated career keep going?<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can\u2019t kill the bloke, he\u2019s like a cockroach, he just keeps going!,\u201d De Goey cheekily responded. <\/p>\n
\u201cI dunno, he can probably play for another five years, to be honest!\u201d<\/p>\n

As for his own form, De Goey has gotten back to some of his brilliant best play over the past month following two \u201csuper frustrating\u201d seasons riddled by injury since winning the 2023 flag. <\/p>\n
It\u2019s robbed De Goey of two of the prime years of his career, as a groin issue flared up other problems and limited him to 24 games across the last two seasons.<\/p>\n
\u201cSuper frustrating. It was no fault of my own, it was just one of those things,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had the groin, then I was overusing my groin and tried to power that through other parts of my body, like my Achilles. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt was one thing after the next. But I\u2019ve worked super hard to get where I am now. It\u2019s nice to win games and have the support of the team.\u201d<\/p>\n

The midfielder-forward has put the tough injury run behind him, missing just one game so far in 2026. <\/p>\n
And he\u2019s looked particularly explosive in recent weeks in the De Goey we\u2019ve been accustomed to seeing over his 192-game career.<\/p>\n
De Goey has averaged 28 disposals over his last three games and thrived in a permanent midfield role with his feet finally under him. <\/p>\n
\u201cI think playing up the ground and around the ball a bit more has helped me out,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve just grown and got some confidence. I haven\u2019t been playing this sort of footy for a long period of time. <\/p>\n
\u201cTo get back to where I am now, accumulating more ball and honing in on my craft, it\u2019s been really good. <\/p>\n
\u201cI feel like I\u2019m having an impact for the team.\u201d<\/p>\n
