{"id":691999,"date":"2026-05-24T19:04:26","date_gmt":"2026-05-24T19:04:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/691999\/"},"modified":"2026-05-24T19:04:26","modified_gmt":"2026-05-24T19:04:26","slug":"croc-rowing-billboard-in-rockhampton-left-people-scratching-heads-ahead-of-2032-olympics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/691999\/","title":{"rendered":"Croc-rowing billboard in Rockhampton left people &#8216;scratching heads&#8217; ahead of 2032 Olympics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A billboard flashing a variety of ads along a busy road is something the average hurried motorist might easily ignore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But a giant sign with grinning, muscular, cartoon crocodiles, rowing in the Fitzroy River with the words &#8220;Push Off Penrith&#8221; has left Rockhampton residents intrigued.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The billboard first caught public attention last year, amid debate about whether the central Queensland city would host flatwater rowing and canoeing at the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Generating chatter on social media, in local government meetings and newspaper gossip columns, there had been no answer to the question of who was behind the campaign until now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But underneath the flashing LED lights was no council-funded campaign or political tennis match, as some thought, but rather a grass-roots advertisement from two passionate locals, keen to see their city shine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s just a couple of local people wanting good things for Rockhampton,&#8221; retiree and billboard owner Peter McGregor said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He teamed up with a friend in advertising to design the billboard and display it between paid ads.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cartoon crocodiles rowing on a billboard with the word 'CAN' highlighted in the word Rockhampton\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/ddadb672320a1b2767dc3a17116e9491.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Warren Acutt conceded he did use AI to design the ad, as it was a &#8220;bit hard&#8221; to get crocodiles to sit in a row boat.\u00a0 (ABC Capricornia: Katrina Beavan)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The grandfather first decided to act when he heard Prime Minister Anthony Albanese suggest Penrith as a more suitable location for the rowing on a sports podcast last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The only motive we have is we want the rowing in Rockhampton,&#8221; Mr McGregor said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">When it first appeared, the mystery billboard piqued the interest of politicians and councillors curious about who was behind it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s been quite fun actually. (ABC Capricornia: Katrina Beavan)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Advertising business owner Warren Acutt, who designed the ad with artificial intelligence, agreed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said he was inspired by all the apparent concerns about crocodiles living in the future Olympic venue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Obviously the crocodiles have got a lot of attention, so we thought why not highlight that and have a little play on it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The ad was swapped out for an alternative some months later, which featured the word &#8220;Rockhampton&#8221; in capital letters, highlighting the word &#8220;can&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Two women hold a rowing boat above their heads as they prepare to place it in the water. (ABC: Alice Roberts)<\/p>\n<p>Secret sauce the &#8216;larrikin&#8217; factor<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Rockhampton Mayor Tony Williams said in an initial meeting about the Olympic rowing, stakeholders and politicians wrongly thanked the council for the billboard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I said, &#8216;Well, it wasn&#8217;t council.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;And everyone looked around the table to see who sponsored that sign to go up there. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p>Rowing politics<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Since the state government confirmed Rockhampton as the host of the sport at the 2032 Games in March last year, there has been debate over whether it was a suitable location.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The decision to hold the Olympic rowing in a river with crocodiles made international headlines, and prompted campaigns for the race to be moved to south-east Queensland or interstate to Sydney.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the Queensland government is <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-04-16\/brisbane-2032-rowing-rockhampton-fitzroy-venue\/106571096\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106571096\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">yet to be convinced<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie even declared the rowing would be held in Rockhampton, or not at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It is a position backed by Mr Acutt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[The ad] is to show that we are positive about it and [we won&#8217;t] lay down and let someone else take it away.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A crocodile sighting warning sign in front of a brown river. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/707dd2d71c9686e3627eaeb7c72259cb.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The fact that the Fitzroy River is inhabited by crocodiles has drawn international attention. (ABC Capricornia: Tobias Jurss-Lewis)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Though World Rowing is yet to officially sign off on the venue&#8217;s suitability, it <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-03-25\/world-rowing-back-fitzroy-river-olympic-rowing-venue\/106495440\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106495440\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has backed the region<\/a>, as has the International Canoe Federation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Two preferred &#8220;field of play&#8221; options are being assessed by the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA) ahead of independent technical analysis, with significant works expected to be undertaken on the river.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">As for the crocodiles in the river, Mr Williams said he did not think it would be a &#8220;true issue&#8221; that would stop the rowing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">For Mr McGregor, he said he would be doing all he could to keep the focus on Rockhampton not letting go of the event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a good region, we have a good river, and I think they can make the facilities to suit the rowing event in Rockhampton.
