(ABC News: Owen Jacques)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Her driving instructor Kerry Turner knows Roxsy is confident behind the wheel, but is deeply aware of how intense the tests can be for students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">What&#8217;s more, Roxsy has decided to make things harder on herself by going for a manual licence when most of her friends have gone for an automatic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I really like full driving, and I feel like I have more control over the gears and the car, so I just feel like it&#8217;s a bit better,&#8221; Roxsy said.<\/p>\n<p>Young women going manual<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Turner from Murris on the Move driving school watches Roxsy drive away with the government examiner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">There was no bunny hopping, grinding gears or stalling, so Roxsy is off to a solid start.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Woman standing beside white car on busy road.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/ae34608c9a5e107d50589d8ca0531697.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Kerry Turner says drivers can earn an auto licence, and come back later for their manual. (ABC News: Owen Jacques)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The proud Kalkadoon woman and long-time instructor said while automatic lessons still outnumbered manual, young women were helping even out the numbers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s the girls that are stepping up to get their apprenticeship, and it could be in carpentry, electricians, anywhere in the trades industry,&#8221;  Ms Turner said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;They believe they need their manual licence, which is a great thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In the past 23 years, the Queensland government has gone from issuing about 150,000 auto licences a year, or about 7 per cent overall, to now more than 770,000 a year \u2014 about 21 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Manual licences over the same period have fallen from 93 per cent at their peak, down to 79 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Manuals a &#8216;dying race&#8217; in cities<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Freshly retired manual instructor Greg Williams spent close to 20 years teaching in Brisbane before moving to the Sunshine Coast.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Man in blue shirt and hat in blue car smiling\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/ce713c71821b4a01c76632f15a2af05d.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Greg Williams has spent 25 years teaching young people how to drive manual vehicles for their licence tests. (ABC News: Owen Jacques)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said there had been a &#8220;massive change&#8221; over the past five years as young drivers ditched manual vehicles, particularly in the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When I was down in Brisbane, I just found city people \u2014 if I had to go to Greenslopes or in the city, primarily 90 per cent would be auto and 10 per cent would be manual at the (transport) testing centre,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a dying race down there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Transport and Main Roads statistics found one in four car licences issued in the past year were for an automatic licence, up from one in 10 in 2003.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Gold and Sunshine Coast regions had the next highest take-up of auto licences, while north Queensland, central Queensland and southern Queensland still has more than 80 per cent going manual.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But for those with access to beaches, tracks or worked on a property, he said a manual licence still appealed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">And he was not the only one to notice the trend.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Man in suit standing beside yellow vehicle\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/795458a3f4702b6171f644e77f948bba.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">RACQ principal technical researcher Andrew Kirk says the &#8220;tide has completely turned&#8221; against manual vehicles. (Supplied: RACQ)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;If you&#8217;re on a farm and out west, there&#8217;s a lot of old machinery still out there, and you need to know how to drive a manual to drive a tractor,&#8221; RACQ researcher Andrew Kirk said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Mainstream&#8217; wants automatics<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Even so, Mr Kirk said the &#8220;tide has completely turned&#8221; against manuals, with almost all new cars built with either automatic transmission or, in the case of electric vehicles, no transmission at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The statistics are stark \u2014 demand for a manual car has been ground down to almost nothing over the past 25 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In 2000, six out of 10 new vehicles sold in Australia had automatic transmissions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Last year, it was 9.8 out of 10 and so far in 2026, it is closer to 9.9.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Fewer than 4,000 new manual vehicles have been sold nationally since the start of the year, compared to more than 359,000 automatics.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bald man in dark suit\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/553be013c8607dc274eab60d2ccff830.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Tony Weber says mainstream Australia does not want to buy manual vehicles. (Supplied: Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Tony Weber is the chief executive of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and knows the numbers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He said the slow demise of manuals was in part thanks to &#8220;a whole generation&#8221; that never learned how to drive them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[They] are now a niche product for sports cars and some off-highway activities, off-road activities,&#8221; Mr Weber said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Mainstream Australians are not buying manuals anymore.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Manuals still a thrill for drivers<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Instructor Greg Williams knows manuals may soon become a relic of the past, but he plans to hold on to his beloved hatchback.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s brilliant because you&#8217;ve got a clutch, you&#8217;ve got a gear shift, you&#8217;ve got gears and acceleration pedal and all that. (ABC News: Owen Jacques)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">After a tense wait at the examiner&#8217;s window, she is given the good news, her face awash with relief and excitement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I just passed my Ps test doing manual,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a full life-changer for me.
