Kimi Antonelli has tightened his grip on the Formula One drivers\u2019 world championship after a dominant victory in Monday morning\u2019s Canadian Grand Prix as his main rivals for the title, including Australia\u2019s Oscar Piastri, all ran into major trouble.<\/p>\n
Already anointed as motor racing\u2019s next global superstar, Antonelli kept a cool head during a wild race on the Montreal street circuit to cruise to his fourth Grand Prix in succession for Mercedes.<\/p>\n
With the win, he extended his lead in the championship standings to a commanding 43 points after five of the 22 rounds this season.<\/p>\n
The Italian teenager\u2019s job was made a lot easier after his more experienced team mate George Russell was forced to retire halfway through the race while still in the lead.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you everyone. Not the way I wanted to win. It was meant to be a good fight with George but we will take it,\u201d Antonelli told his engineers after taking the chequered flag. <\/p>\n
Russell, who started from pole after winning Sunday\u2019s sprint race, was livid when his power unit failed and he was forced to pull over on the side of the Montreal street circuit.<\/p>\n
It was a terrible result for the Englishman and his frustration showed as he threw his headrest out of the cockpit before being consoled by Mercedes boss Toto Wolff.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust everything turned off all of a sudden. The engine stopped, no electronics, no proper breaking,\u201d Russell said. \u201cI\u2019m a bit lost for words, can\u2019t really say much more.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lewis Hamilton finished the race second for Ferrari – more than 10 seconds behind Antonelli – while Max Verstappen claimed his first podium of the season for Red Bull.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat was tough this weekend. Definitely the result we deserved,\u201d Hamilton said. <\/p>\n
\u201cThank you so much to everyone back at the factory.<\/p>\n
\u201cLet\u2019s keep pushing. This is a good step. Let\u2019s keep working to try and close the gap.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both McLaren\u2019s had a disastrous day after making the mistake of starting the race on intermediate tyres because rain was forecast.<\/p>\n
The rain did not arrive so both McLarens had to pit straight away, completely ruining their chances of contending for the race win.<\/p>\n
Piastri\u2019s day went from bad to worse when he crashed into backmarker Alex Albon and was given a 10-second penalty by the stewards, who found him to be at fault.<\/p>\n
Piastri eventually finished 11th, one spot outside the points.<\/p>\n
But at least he did finish.<\/p>\n
His McLaren team mate Norris didn\u2019t even make it to the end after he conked out with a gearbox failure.<\/p>\n
