The outage impacted local train lines, traffic lights and hospitals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">As of 8pm, about 1,000 people remained without power across the CBD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Crews will work through the night to restore power and repair the damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Pump trucks are on site and are removing thousands of litres of water from the zone substation on Little Collins Street,&#8221; a Citipower spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We\u2019ll continue to work through the evening to remove all the water and will begin damage assessments and any repairs immediately after the water is gone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">VicTraffic said the power failure also knocked out dozens of traffic lights across the city.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;A large power failure has caused up to 40 sets of traffic lights to be out across the CBD, East Melbourne and South Yarra,&#8221; a VicTraffic social media post said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When traffic lights aren&#8217;t working, you must follow the same rules at an intersection that has a stop or give way sign or line.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A traffic light on Southbank Boulevard in Melbourne.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/835c78362f78931d3fe38abd8052e837.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Dozens of traffic lights in Melbourne were impacted by the outage.
