Local surf cam CCTV footage emerged showing how the incident and response unfolded \u2014 including, as Sloane said, how water patrol staff were on the spot within seconds.<\/p>\n
Hickel backed WSL procedures after the decision was made to resume the competition.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re going to have full surveillance for wildlife in place,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll the jet skis in the water plus drone and spotters \u2014 and the surf is absolutely pumping.\u201d<\/p>\n
The incident comes 11 years after Australian great Mick Fanning fought off a shark in his final at the South African J-Bay Pro.<\/p>\n
Ferreira went on to beat Dora and Hawaiian five-time world champion Carissa Moore beat American Sawyer Lindblad in the women\u2019s final.<\/p>\n
Ferreira then ended the day\u2019s competition by beating Australian Morgan Cibilic in the men\u2019s decider.<\/p>\n
Dora had produced a perfect 10 wave score in Sunday\u2019s quarter-finals, but Ferreira dominated on Monday and has taken over the world No.1 ranking.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh really? That\u2019s good. But it\u2019s a long year, it\u2019s a long journey and there\u2019s a lot of work behind (this),\u201d Ferreira said when told he had taken top spot in the rankings.<\/p>\n
\u201cStep by step, it\u2019s just incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n
It was the first event win for Moore since she returned to competition this year as a wildcard, following the birth of her daughter Olena.<\/p>\n
Moore had Olena in her arms as she was carried up the beach after winning the final.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s better than I could have dreamed. It means so much to me,\u201d Moore said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I walked away two years ago, I didn\u2019t know if I would get this feeling back.\u201d<\/p>\n
Moore dedicated the win to surfer and filmmaker Greg Browning, who died last year.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe is the most spectacular human I\u2019ve ever met and he\u2019s the example we all should strive to be,\u201d Moore said.<\/p>\n
It was a breakthrough event for Cibilic, who has returned to the championship tour after several years of inconsistent form.<\/p>\n
\u201cI guess this just proves to myself that I\u2019m back. I\u2019m going to try to stay here and hopefully put up a few more good performance this year \u2014 over the moon,\u201d the Australian said.<\/p>\n
Cibilic started the day\u2019s competition by beating American Griffin Colapinto to reach the final.<\/p>\n
