Prices will rise 1.5 per cent in South Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest cuts <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/albanese-admits-tax-changes-may-hit-businesses-beyond-tech-20260525-p60094.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">will be for small businesses<\/a>, whose rates in NSW will fall up to 11 per cent ($705) and 10.5 per cent ($445), the regulator said.<\/p>\n<p>Related Article<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/for-the-first-time-renewable-energy-is-supplying-a-majority-of-our-power-20260116-p5nun6.html\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"sc-cba76dee-0 hdiTqm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Renewable energy reached a record high share of the electricity grid in the December quarter. \" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1769138169_785_2dc8a82312b4c6ad8ee1e4429eeabfe339939b82.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ioInpc\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In Victoria, where the state\u2019s Essential Services Commission sets its own default offer, prices will fall by 5 per cent ($84) a year, while small businesses would save 6 per cent ($241) a year.<\/p>\n<p>However, the default offer is not a fixed price, it is a cap on rates. The price listed represents an average amount of energy use, and if a customer\u2019s consumption matches it, that is the most a retailer can charge those who selected the default plan.<\/p>\n<p>Those on the default plan who use less electricity pay less and those who use more, pay more.<\/p>\n<p>The default offer on the Ausgrid network, for Sydney and the Central Coast, is $1899. On the Endeavour network in western Sydney, Blue Mountains and South Coast it is $2328. On the Essential Energy network in regional NSW it is $2604. In South East Queensland the default offer on the Energex network is $1988 and $2334 in South Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The average default offer in Victoria is $1591.<\/p>\n<p>Attacks on energy infrastructure in the Middle East and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz \u2013 a vital trade route for much of the world\u2019s oil and natural gas \u2013 have been roiling global energy markets this year and could push up the cost of running Australia\u2019s coal- and gas-burning power stations if the conflict continues. So far, however, domestic gas and electricity markets have remained stable.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Clare Savage, chair of the Australian Energy Regulator, attributed the default price cuts mostly to falling wholesale electricity costs \u2013 what retailers pay generators for power before supplying customers \u2013 following a period of record-breaking contributions from renewable energy, which lowered the need to call on expensive gas-burning power stations to plug supply gaps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite uncertainty created by conflict in the Middle East, wholesale energy costs have not increased.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Energy Minister Chris Bowen hailed the falling prices and said it was evidence the government\u2019s plan to replace ageing coal plants with renewables was working.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Energy Minister Chris Bowen welcomed the announcement. \" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/22a3b98277af01b062e74841284611c714fc0d6f.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ldCIuB\"\/>Energy Minister Chris Bowen welcomed the announcement. It operates from 11am until 2pm in NSW and Queensland and 12 to 3 in South Australia.
