It’s really not.”

As has been well covered so far this season, it’s qualifying where the drivers are really hurting under these regulations.

The almost 50-50 split between combustion and electrical power incentivises drivers to push less aggressively through some corners to ensure the battery is fully charged for the straights. It’s a deeply counterintuitive driving style and has taken the edge off the only session of a weekend in which teams and drivers push themselves and the machinery to the limit in pursuit of maximum speed.

The same applies in race conditions too, but reviews are more mixed over longer formats, when drivers are more used to managing different elements of performance.

Verstappen, though, has no patience for any of it, as he made clear to Sky Sports after finishing third in Montreal.

“The thing is, I know how pure other motorsport can feel, so when you come back to this, it’s not very nice,” he explained.

“I don’t want to be too negative now after a race like this, but I know what it feels like to drive pure racing cars, pure overtakes, pure racing, just natural driving.

“This is all a bit — especially qualifying — anti-driving, anti-racing. That’s not what Formula 1 should be about.”

“Looked like idiots” Piastri on messy GP | 01:34

DIDN’T VERSTAPPEN SAY HE WAS STAYING IN F1?

It’s partly because of Verstappen’s criticism — even if it’s not directly in response to it — that Formula 1 is attempting to rush through meaningful hardware changes for 2027 to rebalance the hybrid engine to address driver complaints.

By boosting petrol power and retuning the hybrid motor to something closer to a 60-40 power split — along with some other changes that will boost charging capacity — the sport hopes that next year’s cars will be more conventional to drive at most circuits.

The Dutchman praised the initiative earlier during the Montreal weekend.

“It will make the product better, so that means that I’m happier, and that’s what I want — to be able to continue and perform well,” he said.

He was even more explicit in comments made to De Telegraaf appearing to confirm that he had decided to continue racing into next season.

“Yes, certainly,” he said when asked if his 2027 participation could be assumed. “Unless very crazy things happen, but I’m not assuming that. I hope everyone keeps their word. But I can confirm that I am staying in Formula 1.”

At the time the interview was conducted, there was optimism that the sport had found the resolve required to force through politically complex changes to the rules, and Verstappen spoke as if they had been agreed.

“The ratio between the combustion engine and the electric motor will then be approximately 60-40, depending a bit on the circuit,” he said. “It is not quite top-notch yet, but it is a step in the right direction. And certainly an improvement compared to the current situation.”

But in the days since then, it’s become clear that the politics of changing the rules aren’t as straightforward as some had hoped.

Crunch meetings on the sidelines of the grand prix had hit some significant roadblocks that are putting the in-principle agreement to change the rules in jeopardy.

In parting comments at the end of the round, Verstappen underlined his threat to quit the sport.

“It’s not what Formula 1 should be about,” he said.

“F1 just needs to be more pure, and I really hope that what they try to do next year will go through, because I think that is necessary — the minimum necessary — to make it a bit more natural and a bit more back to normal, or at least a bit more pure racing.”

Piastri penalised for early collision! | 00:22

WHAT’S THE HOLD UP?

The political issues were already clear when the FIA announced changes were being proposed.

By boosting the fuel flow rate to increase combustion power, more fuel will be required to complete a grand prix. Some teams, however, have already committed to using their 2026 chassis in 2027, which means carrying over a fuel tanks that at some circuits would be too small to make it to the end of the race.

That problem has been solved fairly quickly, albeit somewhat controversially, according to Racing Bulls boss Alan Permane.

“We have already spoken and come to an agreement, certainly at team principal level, that if anyone wanted to carry their chassis over and that wasn’t quite big enough to do the 310-kilometre [sic] race, we would look at [shortening] selective races — and of course, only where absolutely necessary — by maybe one or two laps [and] limiting laps to grid to one.

“That’s already in place and ready to go.”

But Red Bull Racing principal Laurent Mekies made clear that there were problems that needed to be solved at the engine level.

“I think chassis side, there is not really a stress on it,” he said. “There is some tension on the PU side from a timing perspective, and that’s why we are all trying to converge as quickly as we can now.”

There are reportedly two major objections to proposed engine hardware changes.

The first comes from Audi, which believes a multimillion-dollar regulation change for its first year of competition would be a hard sell to the board, particularly so late in the piece. Though supportive in principle — all the engine manufacturers appear to agree that change is needed — Audi wants the rule tweaks delayed until 2028.

MORE FORMULA 1

TITLE STATE OF PLAY: Why star’s baffling F1 claim doesn’t stack up

CANADA TALKING POINTS: Star’s dark arts as true motive for surrender exposed; McLaren no-score disaster explained

‘LOOKED LIKE IDIOTS’: Piastri in tense talk with team over botched gamble as McLaren implode

The other objective is even more difficult.

The Formula 1 rules contain a mechanism to help struggling power unit manufacturers catch up. Known as additional development and upgrade opportunities (ADUO), it grants testing and financial concessions to any marque that is 2 per cent slower or more off the benchmark.

ADUO concessions are announced quarterly, and the FIA is set to announce the first round of allowances before the next race in Monaco.

The problem here is that any manufacturer granted concessions will be able to use them to work on next year’s hardware changes, potentially supersizing their advantage.

The problem could be solved by expunging the ADUO rules for this season, but that’s reportedly been blocked by both Honda and Ferrari — and reportedly also General Motors, whose Cadillac team is currently taking Ferrari customer engines.

Honda’s need for ADUO is obvious — so obvious in fact that teams have already agreed to boost concessions specifically to help the Japanese marque get off the line. To lose those concessions would be to extinguish what optimism remains at Aston Martin-Honda for this season.

Ferrari, meanwhile, still believes it can contend for the championship but only if it has the chance to upgrade its engine this season, the power unit being its biggest weakness relative to Mercedes — and McLaren by extension — and even Red Bull Racing.

Agreeing to suspend ADUO would be tantamount to giving up on the title after having invested massively in its 2026 program.

That should also be read in the context of Ferrari having already lost a previous regulatory battle about its starts. Last year it raised that getting cars off the line would be difficult with these engines but had proposed rule changes rebuffed. It then designed an engine that would be easier to launch at the expense of top speed, only for other engine manufacturers to complain on the eve of the season and win a key rules concession allowing them to spool up their turbos for several seconds before the lights go out.

Asking Ferrari to take another hit appears to have gone down bitterly in Maranello.

Thus an impasse has been reached.

Russell RAGES! Brutal blow ends his race | 01:08

SO WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Reportedly only Mercedes and Red Bull Powertrains were prepared to commit to the 2027 changes. Mercedes obviously has nothing to lose with ADUO — in fact it would benefit from having other manufacturers denied upgrade changes — and consensus appears to be forming around Red Bull also being likely to miss out on concessions.

Red Bull, though, is further motivated to have the rules changed to keep Verstappen engaged — plus it appears to have one of the top internal combustion engines, so boosting that element of the power unit would likely mean an overall performance improvement.

But having two of the six manufacturers isn’t enough. To change next year’s regulations, at least four engine builders must agree.

The FIA is reportedly targeting Audi to switch sides given its opposition appears to be financial rather than ideological, and cost cap rules can be tweaked given the unusual circumstance of a mid-cycle engine hardware change.

According to The Race, Honda’s position is less fixed, with the Japanese manufacturer seemingly happy to play a role forming a majority rather than leave the vote deadlocked.

The FIA’s motivation to have this resolved now is understandable. Regardless of the bad PR that would come with Verstappen quitting, to let complaints about the engines drag on for another year would be intolerable — and the sport will soon begin wrangling manufacturers over the post-2030 engine rules, for which it wants to reintroduce V8 motors.

Getting this over with is preferable to constantly making piecemeal changes — and that goes for the sport, the teams, the drivers and the fans.

The next weeks will be critical in reaching a decision. Engine development lead time is significant, and it’s already late in the day to be arguing about execution.

But the timing is interesting. The Canadian Grand Prix, thanks to its track layout and weather conditions, looked a lot like a traditionally entertaining race of drivers pressuring one another into mistakes rather than relying on battery differences to overtake. The next round in Monaco will be the most favourable race for these power units given the slow and twisty track will make charging the battery effortless.

Will the timing of these races take some of the urgency out of the decision-making?

Verstappen certainly hopes not — and the Dutchman says there’ll be no second chances.

Asked by De Telegraaf whether he would consider taking a sabbatical while the sport worked through its problems, his answer was clear and unequivocal.

“No, not a sabbatical. I’m not the person for that. If I stop, I stop completely.”

There are no cars on track this weekend, but the stakes remain extremely high in Formula 1.

Max Verstappen was all smiles standing on the podium for the first time this season.
