Credit: LINZ<\/p>\n<p>LINZ has released new high-resolution LiDAR point cloud data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The data, captured from aerial scans, presents the most detailed 3D views so far of parts of New Zealand\u2019s coastline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toit\u016b Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) is in the middle of conducting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linz.govt.nz\/products-services\/data\/3d-coastal-mapping\/programme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">3D Coastal Mapping<\/a> (3DCM) project, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spatialsource.com.au\/linz-begins-3d-lidar-mapping-of-nzs-coastline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">began<\/a> in 2025 and will eventually cover 40% of the nation\u2019s coastline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The areas covered extend, typically, 200 metres inland of the mean high-water spring coastline and seaward to a water depth of 25 metres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The areas being targeted have been chosen either because they comprise highly populated coastal communities, or have significant coastal infrastructure or have a higher risk of coastal inundation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is hoped that the three-year project will result in the collection of data that can be used for better understanding coastal change and for tackling problems such as sea-level rise, storm surges and tsunamis.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-wp-class--hide=\"state.isContentHidden\" data-wp-class--show=\"state.isContentVisible\" data-wp-init=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on--click=\"actions.showLightbox\" data-wp-on--load=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on--pointerdown=\"actions.preloadImage\" data-wp-on--pointerenter=\"actions.preloadImageWithDelay\" data-wp-on--pointerleave=\"actions.cancelPreload\" data-wp-on-window--resize=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" height=\"335\" width=\"572\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/linz3.jpg\" alt=\"A false-colour depiction of trees on the coast at Oakura, made with data from the 3DCM project\" class=\"wp-image-46420\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\u014cakura. We\u2019re pleased to have reached another milestone on time,\u201d said Stuart Caie, 3D Coastal Mapping Programme Lead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis release is one of several dataset milestones as we continue to make more coastal data available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The data is publicly accessible on the LINZ Data Service <a href=\"https:\/\/data.linz.govt.nz\/layer\/d3Y5Qkvcp5Q5vXf\/new-zealand-coastal-lidar-point-cloud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An <a href=\"https:\/\/experience.arcgis.com\/experience\/0ff87616e3d84e6290ff2f495afda58f\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">online tracker<\/a> shows how much of the project has been completed so far.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"(Click to enlarge) Tauranga Port, as depicted using LiDAR data collected during the 3D Coastal Mapping project.
