{"id":698684,"date":"2026-05-27T21:53:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T21:53:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/698684\/"},"modified":"2026-05-27T21:53:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T21:53:13","slug":"matthew-perrys-assistant-jailed-for-role-in-friends-actors-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/698684\/","title":{"rendered":"Matthew Perry&#8217;s assistant jailed for role in Friends actor&#8217;s death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Matthew Perry&#8217;s live-in personal assistant, who had a central role in the Friends star&#8217;s descent into ketamine addiction and injected him with the fatal dose of the drug, has been sentenced to three years and five months in prison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett handed down the sentence to 60-year-old Kenneth Iwamasa in federal court in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He was also sentenced to two years of probation and a $10,000 fine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It was the fifth and final sentencing in the two-and-a-half-year investigation and prosecution that followed Perry&#8217;s death at age 54 in October 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Iwamasa was at Perry&#8217;s side through the final days of his life, acting as the actor&#8217;s enabler, drug messenger and de facto doctor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He was the last person to see Perry alive, and he was the one who found him dead in his Jacuzzi.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-10-30\/chandler-bing-matthew-perry-the-underdog\/103036862\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chandler Bing was an underdog but often a voice of reason <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">College roommate, secret lover, best friend, proud\u00a0duck owner \u2014\u00a0Chandler Bing was a well-loved Friend, and one that gave us many laughs over the course of 10 seasons of the hit sitcom.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He was the first person to reach a deal with prosecutors, pleading guilty in 2024 to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine resulting in death, and became their most important witness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Iwamasa&#8217;s lawyer, Alan Eisner, argued for a six-month prison term with six months of home confinement, emphasising that he was always acting at the direction of a boss with far more power than he.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;His loyalty to Mr Perry was paramount,&#8221; Mr Eisner told the judge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;He worshipped Mr Perry, he looked up to Mr Perry. All he did was please and accommodate Mr Perry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">When Mr Eisner said Iwamasa was unable to act differently than he did, Judge Garnett cut him off and said, &#8220;Unwilling. Not unable. (LinkedIn)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Iwamasa stood at the court&#8217;s podium before the sentencing and made the unusual move of looking right at Perry&#8217;s family and friends as he spoke into the microphone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I&#8217;m horribly, horribly sorry, and I offer my condolences to you,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m just so sorry to have done these illegal acts that I will forever regret. I will take that to my grave.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Iwamasa had no visible reaction to the sentence. You could have made the phone call,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But you didn&#8217;t. Because you were living a dandy life.
