\u201cproblem for inflation\u201d and a \u201chuge cost for the average business\u201d, an expert has warned as inflation remains elevated.<\/p>\n<p>The Fair Work Commission is expected to hand down its Annual Wage Review decision in the coming weeks, with the Australian Council of Trade Unions pushing for a six per cent pay rise for minimum wage workers..<\/p>\n<p>It comes as <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skynews.com.au\/business\/finance\/trimmed-mean-inflation-rises-in-year-to-april-to-its-highest-point-since-september-2024-as-housing-costs-remain-elevated\/news-story\/b4500d8cd408545e184ff794299739b2\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"b4500d8cd408545e184ff794299739b2\" data-tgev-label=\"business\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\">inflation remains elevated at 4.2 per cent<\/a>, prompting concerns over the impact of such an increase.<\/p>\n<p>AMP\u2019s deputy chief economist Diana Mousina said the upcoming wage review could heap pressure on already too high inflation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do get the minimum wage decision due in a few weeks, which not just affects the minimum-wage but also awards and enterprise bargaining agreements,\u201d she told Business Now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo if that&#8217;s more elevated than expected &#8211; an above-inflation type increase &#8211; that could lift wages growth again, which would be a problem for inflation because that&#8217;s a huge cost for the average business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ACTU said a six per cent pay increase would shield low-paid workers from high inflation while lifting the minimum wage to $26.45 per hour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne in four workers in Australia rely on minimum award wages, particularly those working in hospitality, retail, fast food, administration, and care industries,\u201d the ACTU said in a statement on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Inflation data on Wednesday revealed the headline rate had sunk to 4.2 per cent &#8211; well outside the Reserve Bank of Australia&#8217;s two to three per cent per cent target band.<\/p>\n<p>Trimmed mean inflation &#8211; the middle 70 per cent of price changes core to the RBA&#8217;s decision &#8211; lifted to 3.4 per cent, its highest point since September 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Despite concerns over the potential impact, Labor has called for an <a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skynews.com.au\/australia-news\/politics\/albanese-government-backs-aboveinflation-minimum-wage-increase-despite-employer-concerns\/news-story\/fbb22955d248983af012beddf0f2316e\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"fbb22955d248983af012beddf0f2316e\" data-tgev-label=\"australia-news\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\">above inflation pay rise<\/a> to be handed down by the FWC.<\/p>\n<p>Capital Economics head of APAC Marcel Thieliant warned this would be \u201c<a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skynews.com.au\/business\/finance\/labors-disastrous-call-to-lift-minimum-wage-beyond-inflation-could-add-to-economic-spiral-marcel-thieliant-warns\/news-story\/ee01b44f826977844c82ae5ab5371d3c\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-tgev=\"event119\" data-tgev-container=\"bodylink\" data-tgev-order=\"ee01b44f826977844c82ae5ab5371d3c\" data-tgev-label=\"business\" data-tgev-metric=\"ev\">disastrous<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"poster-img\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/daac9f7ec85836b2d8c9a9ab6ca03f7a.jpeg\" data-sctrack=\"op-poster-img\" alt=\"RBA expected to lift rates to 4.6 per cent with inflation expectations at \u2018record high\u2019\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they&#8217;re calling for a hike of above inflation this year, that would be disastrous because on our forecast we have inflation averaging five per cent this year,\u201d he told Business Now earlier in the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they want to beat that, they need to give an extraordinarily large minimum wage hike that would add to this inflationary spiral that we&#8217;re now seeing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call for an above inflation pay rise comes as Australia\u2019s productivity growth remains at one per cent per year.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Thieliant said this made offering a real wage increase challenging.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if you use last year&#8217;s (inflation) measure (of 3.8 per cent), it&#8217;s a bit difficult to justify an above inflation pay hike because productivity growth is still very weak,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Employers have called for a more modest wage increase and warned anything higher than inflation could add to price pressures.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry backed a 3.5 per cent increase, while the Australian Restaurant and Caf\u00e9 Association proposed a pay bump between 3.5 per cent and four per cent.<\/p>\n<p>ACCI\u2019s chief executive Andrew McKellar said the ACTU\u2019s proposed five per cent bump was \u201ccompletely unjustified\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The FWC last year lifted the minimum wage by 3.5 per cent when inflation was around three per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Australians were delivered higher wage bumps in previous years.<\/p>\n<p>Fair Work delivered a 3.75 per cent bump in 2024, a 5.75 per cent increase in 2023 and a 4.6 per cent hike in 2022.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The
