Only Movistar was better placed when it came to strength in numbers.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-b80bb047-deb6-46cc-b836-ffa0d8fb9829-2\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Though it was not an advantage that worked for either of the teams when it came down to the chase for the stage victory, with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/racing\/giro-d-italia-michael-valgren-plays-it-perfectly-to-win-stage-17-in-breakaway-extravaganza\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/racing\/giro-d-italia-michael-valgren-plays-it-perfectly-to-win-stage-17-in-breakaway-extravaganza\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/racing\/giro-d-italia-michael-valgren-plays-it-perfectly-to-win-stage-17-in-breakaway-extravaganza\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Michael Valgren (EF Education-EasyPost) claiming the win<\/a> and Rubio Einer being the best placed Movistar rider with fifth. We missed the group.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">The chances are quickly running out for the stage hunters at the Italian Grand Tour, with a double dose of mountain days ahead for stage 19 and 20 before a sprint finish in Rome.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">\u201cIt was a great opportunity to be honest, to take the stage,&#8221; said Narv\u00e1ez of Wednesday&#8217;s stage in a team statement. &#8220;But it is cycling, and I don\u2019t know how many guys were in the breakaway, but I am happy with my day, and also with my Giro.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">There is a good reason for that, as even though one opportunity was missed on Wednesday the energy was spent on another objective, which was firmly achieved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">The latest race content, interviews, features, reviews and expert buying guides, direct to your inbox!<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Arrieta closed down an attack on the run in to the intermediate sprint so Narv\u00e1ez could leap out of the front group to clinch the 12 sprint points on offer at around 60 kilometres to go. That was enough to put Narv\u00e1ez back in the maglia ciclamino, with 157 points and Paul Magnier (Soudal-QuickStep), the only rider within reach in the battle for the sprint jersey, now sits at 145 points.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">\u201cMy two teammates helped me to do the intermediate sprint, and then we raced until the last climb. I am not thinking about Rome yet, we will go day by day. We know that Paul Magnier is very good, so we need to go day by day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">And what is up next on stage 18 is another day that plays more to the strengths of Narv\u00e1ez, who has <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/teams-riders\/jhonatan-narvaez-vs-paul-magnier-giro-d-italia-maglia-ciclamino-swings-in-favour-of-ecuadorian-ahead-of-the-upcoming-hilly-stages\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/teams-riders\/jhonatan-narvaez-vs-paul-magnier-giro-d-italia-maglia-ciclamino-swings-in-favour-of-ecuadorian-ahead-of-the-upcoming-hilly-stages\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/pro-cycling\/teams-riders\/jhonatan-narvaez-vs-paul-magnier-giro-d-italia-maglia-ciclamino-swings-in-favour-of-ecuadorian-ahead-of-the-upcoming-hilly-stages\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more staying power on the climbs<\/a> than his rival in the sprint competition.
