{"id":699329,"date":"2026-05-28T05:01:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-28T05:01:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/699329\/"},"modified":"2026-05-28T05:01:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-28T05:01:14","slug":"small-habits-that-can-lower-your-grocery-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/699329\/","title":{"rendered":"Small habits that can lower your grocery bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">How we shop for groceries can become &#8220;habitual&#8221;, which might seem beneficial, but experts say it can be unhelpful when it comes to saving money.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s effortful to change habits,&#8221; says Paul Harrison, head of consumer behaviour at Deakin University in Melbourne\/Naarm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When you&#8217;re trying to save money, you do have to change the way that you eat and buy things \u2026 at least for a time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">We asked experts and families for their advice on small changes that can make a difference to your grocery bill.<\/p>\n<p>Use what you already have<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Harrison says, on average, Australian households waste $2,500 to $3,000 a year on food that they throw away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Which is a lot if we&#8217;re trying to save money.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Before mother of two Cassie Head does her grocery shopping, she routinely checks everything that&#8217;s left in her family&#8217;s pantry and fridge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;One thing that I&#8217;m really focusing on is trying to reduce food waste,&#8221; says the content creator and former financial planner, based on the Sunshine Coast\/Kabi Kabi lands.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m doing a stocktake of my pantry, fridge and freezer and seeing what I already have, then making a meal plan around that.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A Woolworths trolley filled with toliet paper, instant coffee, tampons, milk, eggs, bread and Weetbix.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/40e2e61348db0b76d26060fbab7191d5.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Experts say a list is important, so you&#8217;re not tempted to buy other products. (ABC News: Maani Truu)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Choice supermarket researcher Marg Rafferty says &#8220;shopping from your pantry and fridge&#8221; first is an ideal approach to reduce waste and save.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Recently, my family had a whole lot of Greek yoghurt we hadn&#8217;t used.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We turned it into a dressing and did a dish around that product because it was there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Make a list and stick to it<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Once you know what food you have already, you can meal plan around that and make a list of what you need.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Cassie makes sure to include breakfasts, lunches and school snacks in her planning.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-10\/three-hour-healthy-meal-prep-routine-saves-time-money\/105507220\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How this couple perfected their meal-prep routine <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Linh Dao and David Tran say three hours of cooking every Sunday helps their whole week run smoothly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;[I&#8217;m] really trying to [minimise] how many times I&#8217;m going to the shops.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She also says she buys ingredients that can be used across multiple meals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Things like mince, frozen vegetables and legumes, which can make a meal stretch further.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Harrison says whether you&#8217;re grocery shopping online or in-store, a list is important, so you&#8217;re not tempted to buy other products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He recommends families do the planning together, so one member of the household doesn&#8217;t feel like they&#8217;re carrying the burden on their own.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;When everyone has a say in what goes on the list, they&#8217;re more likely to respect the plan and less likely to make impulse purchases that blow the budget,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Research in behavioural science suggests that people are far more likely to follow through on decisions that were developed collectively within a strong family unit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Make fewer visits to the supermarket<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Harrison says supermarkets want us coming in more frequently &#8220;because they know you&#8217;ll buy extra products&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Ultimately, if you&#8217;re trying to save money, shop less frequently,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What we&#8217;ve learnt from research is that most supermarkets actually make their best profits in short trips.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The entire supermarket experience,&#8221; adds Ms Rafferty, &#8220;from the size of your trolley to the colour of the signage, the overall layout, it&#8217;s all designed to get you to spend&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Know what your budget is<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It sounds simple, but Dr Harrison says most people &#8220;don&#8217;t really know how much they&#8217;re spending each week&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Before you leave the house or open an app, have a budget,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It shouldn&#8217;t be a guestimate; you should calculate it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-05-16\/zero-based-budgeting-to-save-money-as-single-mum\/103843492\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Budgeting as a single mum<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Budgeting is not just about restricting your spending. It&#8217;s a tool to help you better manage your money and achieve your financial goals, writes Nataasha Torzsa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He recommends looking at how much you spend over a period of six weeks and then making adjustments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Cassie says she likes to keep herself accountable for what is being spent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;At the end of each month, I go through my bank statement, and I add up every transaction, which can be horrifying,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But I&#8217;m making sure that I know exactly what I am spending and what&#8217;s a realistic budget.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Swap usual products for cheaper options<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Leanne Neiland, from Brisbane\/Meanjin, says she has halved her family of four&#8217;s weekly grocery spend to $200, &#8220;by looking at ways to save and being creative&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She tried these shopping habits to reduce her bill:<\/p>\n<p>Using cheaper meats such as mince and chicken wingsBuying heavily marked-down and almost-expired productsBuying lentils and beans to bulk out mealsUsing more vegetables and less meatEating what&#8217;s in seasonExtending meals to cover two nights, not oneSwapping brand-name products for cheaper alternativesUsing food waste apps that sell &#8220;surprise bags&#8221; of surplus food<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman in an apron holding a chicken near a kitchen bench full of groceries\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/ffa403d648e802a192a4497a6a58662f.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Leanne Neiland has been working to keep the family&#8217;s weekly grocery spend to $200 or less. (Supplied: Leanne Neiland)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Eating more whole foods, you&#8217;re ultimately going to eat less too,&#8221; Ms Neiland says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I have noticed less waste in our garbage bin.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Cassie says marked-down items at supermarkets are usually time-stamped on the corner of the sticker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;My local store usually does its first markdown at 9am, then they&#8217;ll mark it down again around 2pm,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Rafferty says checking the unit price of items is also a good way to see whether it is value for money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Carefully compare loose and packaged items,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;A lot of people think it&#8217;s cheaper to buy loose, but we found that pre-packaged was cheaper 35 per cent of the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;So, there&#8217;s no hard and fast rule, and you do need to pay attention to the unit price.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Struggling isn&#8217;t failure&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dr Harrison says if you are finding it difficult to save money on groceries, you are not alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Sometimes you&#8217;re already making really good decisions, and it&#8217;s just a struggle,&#8221;
