The NFL\u2019s worst-kept secret is that the Philadelphia Eagles<\/a> are planning to trade A.J. Brown<\/a> after June 1, which would allow them to face a significantly reduced cap hit. Part of that assumption is that the Eagles are set to trade Brown<\/a> to the New England Patriots<\/a>, where he\u2019d reunite with his former head coach, Mike Vrabel.<\/p>\n

But that might not be set in stone. Previous reports indicated that the Eagles and Patriots have not reached<\/a> a verbal agreement. Now, there\u2019s even more meat on the bone.<\/p>\n

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network<\/a>, a trade sending Brown to the Patriots is \u201cnot particularly close.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs far as the actual trade, we\u2019re all waiting for June 1 to happen, so the cap hit is in half for the Philadelphia Eagles and they can trade (Brown),\u201d Rapoport said. \u201cI just don\u2019t know that it\u2019s going to be like \u2018snap your fingers and the deal is done,\u2019 because the two sides are where they have been \u2014 which is the Eagles wanting a first-round pick in 2027. The Patriots \u2014 being the most likely destination, we\u2019ll see if someone else arises \u2014 but the Patriots [are] not willing to give up a first-round pick, as of right now. That means they\u2019re\u00a0not particularly close, and there\u2019s a chance this could drag on for the foreseeable future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not much has changed this offseason. The Eagles and Patriots have long known what\u2019s at stake and what type of player is up for negotiation. Yet, now that the 2026 NFL Draft is over, the Patriots\u2019 best chance to add an immediate contributor is via trade.<\/p>\n

Of course, there\u2019s always the possibility of New England<\/a> falling in love with the idea of signing one of the top free agents remaining, such as Stefon Diggs<\/a>, Tyreek Hill<\/a>, or Deebo Samuel<\/a>, in which they wouldn\u2019t have to part with any draft compensation.<\/p>\n
