{"id":700821,"date":"2026-05-28T21:28:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-28T21:28:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/700821\/"},"modified":"2026-05-28T21:28:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-28T21:28:08","slug":"sports-betting-influencer-cops-to-nba-bribery-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/700821\/","title":{"rendered":"Sports betting influencer cops to NBA bribery charges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Marves Fairley is accused of cashing in on insider information from players to place fraudulent bets on games in the U.S. and in China.<\/p>\n<p>BROOKLYN (CN) \u2014\u00a0A Mississippi sports bettor and social media influencer pleaded guilty Thursday in the sweeping federal gambling case charging dozens of NBA players and high-stakes gamblers with a yearslong scheme to fix games across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>Marves \u201cVez\u201d Fairley, a 40-year-old sports betting influencer who goes by \u201cVezino Locks\u201d on Instagram, is accused in a pair of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-edny\/media\/1416611\/dl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">indictments<\/a> of cashing in on insider information from players to place fraudulent bets on games in the U.S. and in China.<\/p>\n<p>In court Thursday, he admitted to seven counts total, including bribery, wire fraud and money laundering.<\/p>\n<p>Fairley, who wore a forest green mock turtleneck sweater, told the judge he paid players to change their performance so he could place bets for himself and bet on behalf of at least one player: Miami Heat guard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courthousenews.com\/feds-charge-nbas-terry-rozier-chauncey-billups-in-mafia-backed-gambling-probes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Terry Rozier<\/a>, who\u2019s charged in the federal criminal case in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>According to prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York indictment, Fairley paid Rozier\u2019s childhood friend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courthousenews.com\/terry-rozier-to-face-additional-charges-in-nba-gambling-probe\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Deniro Laster<\/a> $100,000 in March 2023 in exchange for a tip that Rozier, who was on the Charlotte Hornets at the time, was going to leave a game against the New Orleans Pelicans in the first quarter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI agreed to pay a player to change their game performance to give me an advantage on bets I placed for myself and others,\u201d Fairley told U.S. Magistrate Judge Joseph Marutollo.<\/p>\n<p>Fairley admitted he worked with \u201cother people\u201d to obtain non-public information and used it in bets. \u201cI also placed bets on behalf of players\u201d who provided inside information, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Fairley also admitted he paid NCAA players and professional basketball players within the Chinese Basketball Association \u201cto change their performance in games so myself and others could place bets.\u201d That part of his allocution stems from bribery and wire fraud <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-edpa\/media\/1423601\/dl?inline\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">charges<\/a> originally brought in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania but transferred in April to the Eastern District of New York.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2024, for instance, Fairley said he placed bets \u201cbased on information I received from others that players from La Salle University were going to intentionally perform poorly\u201d in a game against St. Bonaventure.<\/p>\n<p>Eric Siegle of the firm Siegle &amp; Sims represents Fairley. He declined to comment following the hearing.<\/p>\n<p>Fairley is set to be sentenced in February 2027. The wire fraud conspiracy, money laundering conspiracy and wire fraud charges each carry a maximum sentence of 20 years.
