{"id":701250,"date":"2026-05-29T02:16:21","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T02:16:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/701250\/"},"modified":"2026-05-29T02:16:21","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T02:16:21","slug":"gov-urges-agencies-to-fix-security-basics-before-buying-into-frontier-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/701250\/","title":{"rendered":"Gov urges agencies to fix security basics before buying into frontier AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The federal government has told its agencies that the answer to frontier artificial intelligence (AI) compressing attack timelines from days to hours is to fix long-neglected security fundamentals.<\/p>\n<p>                                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"ContentPlaceHolder1_ucArticle_imgImage\" width=\"748\" height=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1780020981_905_ImageResizer.ashx.jpeg\" alt=\"Gov urges agencies to fix security basics before buying into frontier AI\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This is clearly articulated in the Department of Home Affairs&#8217; Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF) advisory 001-2026, which adds that buying into frontier AI models such as the much vaunted Anthropic Claude Mythos isn&#8217;t needed for effective cyber defences.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Australian government entities do not need access to the most advanced frontier AI models to stay protected,&#8221; the PSPF advisory said.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the PSPF points agencies to implement the recommendations in the Australian Signals Directorate&#8217;s (ASD) Essential Eight (E8) framework and its Information Security Manual (ISM).<\/p>\n<p>PSPF requires government entities to achieve E8 Maturity Level Two for user application hardening, and patching of them. Australia&#8217;s National Audit Office (ANAO) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itnews.com.au\/news\/cyber-basics-still-beyond-fed-gov-as-essential-eight-mandate-looms-581172\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">has faulted agencies<\/a> in that respect in past reviews.<\/p>\n<p>The PSPF advisory is mandatory to follow for government entities and defines frontier AI technologies as the most cutting edge in the field.<\/p>\n<p>The PSPF said frontier AI represents an anticipated step change in capability to enable much more powerful automation, reasoning and decision making than previous generations of AI.<\/p>\n<p>The above compliance obligations do not represent an official blanket ban on using advanced AI for cyber defences, however.<\/p>\n<p>Companion guidance issued by the ASD&#8217;s Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) states that AI can be a meaningful way to reduce manual workloads, sharpen threat prioritisation, and to accelerate detection and response.<\/p>\n<p>The official advice puts AI adoption on a medium-term horizon once the short-term fundamentals are in place.<\/p>\n<p>Under a six-step maturity model attached to the advisory, the ASD envisions a state where &#8220;artificial intelligence is used for cyber defence and is secure, controllable, human-supervised and used in an ethical and accountable manner&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This would only be after agencies have locked down configuration baselines, reduced attack surfaces, and dealt with legacy system debt.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the ACSC warns that poorly implemented AI could in fact introduce additional security risk, rather than reducing it.<\/p>\n<p>With the increased use of AI both in adversarial context and by security researchers, concerns are surfacing that an automated, machine-driven effort will result in a what the PSPF calls a &#8220;vulnerability storm&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This has the potential to overwhelm cyber defences, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itnews.com.au\/news\/parallel-bug-discovery-triggers-premature-linux-lpe-disclosure-625736\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">patching efforts can&#8217;t keep up<\/a> with the amount of new vulnerabilities found, which attackers can exploit quicker than in the past.<\/p>\n<p>In its advisory, the PSPF warned that frontier AI is collapsing the window between vulnerability discovery and active exploitation from days to hours.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The federal government has told its agencies that the answer to frontier artificial intelligence (AI) compressing attack timelines&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":360300,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[20],"tags":[256,254,255,64,63,105],"class_list":["post-701250","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-artificial-intelligence","tag-ai","tag-artificial-intelligence","tag-artificialintelligence","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-technology"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/701250","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=701250"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/701250\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/360300"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=701250"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=701250"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=701250"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
