But according to the BBC<\/a>, the Emirati will trigger a debate on that provision at next month\u2019s assembly, which comprises members of the FIA\u2019s 245 mobility and motorsport clubs worldwide.<\/p>\nThe proposed revocation of term limits is expected to be agreed, which would free Ben Sulayem to run for the top job indefinitely.<\/p>\n
Currently the FIA has a mixture of rules for various officeholders, with some restricted to term limits and others not. In a statement to the BBC, an FIA spokesperson said the proposal would abolish all term limits and therefore bring all positions into line under the same rules.<\/p>\n
Asked by the British broadcaster why the FIA didn\u2019t instead institute term limits for all positions instead, the \u201cspokesperson was unable to provide a specific answer\u201d.<\/p>\n
Ben Sulayem\u2019s election in December last year is the subject of court action in France, where would-be candidate Laura Villars is suing the governing body.<\/p>\n
Villars was one of three people to have expressed interest in running against Ben Sulayem for the presidency, but all three were blocked from entering the campaign by a rule that effectively limited the race to just one candidate.<\/p>\n
Each candidate is required to submit a list of six prospective vice-presidents, which must be selected from each of the FIA\u2019s six global regions to ensure international representation.<\/p>\n
But the list of eligible vice-presidents published by the FIA contained only one candidate from South America, who had already committed themselves to Ben Sulayem\u2019s campaign. With no alternative picks from the continent, it effectively prevented other challengers from running.<\/p>\n
The vice-presidents rule was in place before Ben Sulayem ascended to the top job.<\/p>\n
