{"id":701996,"date":"2026-05-29T10:44:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T10:44:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/701996\/"},"modified":"2026-05-29T10:44:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T10:44:11","slug":"laurent-mekies-confident-f1-will-make-changes-needed-for-max-verstappen-to-stay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/701996\/","title":{"rendered":"Laurent Mekies confident F1 will make changes needed for Max Verstappen to stay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Red Bull boss Laurent Mekies is confident the FIA will implement the power unit changes required for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/driver\/max-verstappen\/17529\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Max Verstappen<\/a> to stay heading into the 2027 Formula 1 campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The four-time world champion has been a huge critic of F1\u2019s contentious regulation overhaul for 2026, featuring a near-50:50 split between engine and electrical power.<\/p>\n<p>But the FIA is trying to implement a 60-40 split for 2027, a change Verstappen agrees with, yet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/team\/audi\/49022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Audi<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorsport.com\/team\/ferrari\/3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ferrari<\/a> and Honda are all believed to have voted against it &#8211; hoping to delay the move until 2028.<\/p>\n<p>It has put the switch at jeopardy, given a supermajority amongst manufacturers is needed, and has caused Verstappen to reignite his threats to quit F1 amid his ongoing GT3 commitments.<\/p>\n<p>Read Also:<\/p>\n<p>Mekies reckons the power unit suppliers will eventually come together for the wider good, however, meaning Verstappen should go into the final year of his contract &#8211; 2028 &#8211; at Red Bull.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m optimistic we\u2019ll find the right solutions,\u201d said the Frenchman. \u201cSo, I\u2019m optimistic we\u2019ll find a majority of people agreeing on improving the race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause when it comes to what matters for the sport, I think at some stage we will all put on the side what we feel it may or may not do to our relative competitiveness to do a step in the right direction for the sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think ultimately we\u2019ll get to that point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1780051451_21_max-verstappen-red-bull-racing.jpg\" alt=\"Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing<\/p>\n<p class=\"photographer\">Photo by: Alastair Staley \/ LAT Images via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The FIA plans to implement the switch by increasing the fuel flow and tank capacity, alongside reducing energy deployment, yet the hardware power unit changes come with financial obstacles.<\/p>\n<p>But Mekies reckons \u201cI don\u2019t think the amount of investment is relevant compared to the size of the sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, I think, let me put it this way, we should fix it once for all and not have this as a recurring topic,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see a fantastic battle on the track. There is a lot of positive and a lot of great aspects with what we are seeing.
