NRL twins Toby and Ryan Couchman have pulled off the oldest trick in the book against the unsuspecting media scrum at St George Leagues Club on Friday.<\/p>\n
Toby was put forward for media duties before his 50th NRL match against the Broncos on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n
But his brother Ryan had a plan to mess with the awaiting journos. <\/p>\n
In a cheeky trick that had been in the works for a while, instead of Toby fronting the media pack, it was Ryan. <\/p>\n
And not one of the reporters in the room had a clue that they were asking questions to the wrong twin.<\/p>\n
\u201cGrowing up did you ever think you\u2019d reach this milestone?\u201d the interview began, as no one clocked onto the switcheroo.<\/p>\n
\u201cUm idk growing up I think I would have been happy to play 1,\u201d Ryan said, pretending he was Toby.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut I have got confidence in myself and I thought it would be achievable.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ryan was barely able to hold back his laughter but still no one caught on, despite Toby standing at the back of the room.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo your brother is here as well what is it like taking the field with him?\u201d another reporter asked of Ryan.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s real good,\u201d he said, bursting into laughter.<\/p>\n

The reporter then appeared to think he might have got his stats mixed up. \u201cWait isn\u2019t it your 50 game?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n
A Dragons staffer then put them all out of their misery, stating \u201cNah, it\u2019s his\u201d as Toby walked to the microphone.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh you\u2019ve got us. Good job boys!\u201d one reporter said.<\/p>\n
The Dragons staff member then declared. \u201cOk so here is the real Toby Couchman.\u201d<\/p>\n
The \u2018real Toby\u2019 was then asked if their teammates could even tell them apart.<\/p>\n
\u201cHalf the boys know pretty easily, and the other half have no idea. So they call us both Couchy so they don\u2019t get it wrong,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n
It is not the first time NRL players have tried to pull the old switcheroo.<\/p>\n
A switching attempt by twins Jacob and Daniel Saifiti failed spectacularly back in 2024, when Jacob did the old switch with Daniel after being penalised for a late shot on Melbourne\u2019s Tui Kamikamica during a pre-season game.<\/p>\n
Daniel wandered up towards referee Belinda Sharpe as Jacob walked off the field.<\/p>\n
But Sharpe didn\u2019t fall for it for a second. \u201cWhere\u2019s Jacob? Bring him back on\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Daniel then sheepishly gestured to the sideline and called for his brother to come back on in a move reminiscent of the schoolboy being told off, before sending him to the sin bin.<\/p>\n

Fox League commentator Andrew Voss was all over it and erupted with joy at what was unfolding.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, hang on, the old switcheroo,\u201d Voss said in commentary.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe brothers, oh, that\u2019s so clever, Newcastle. I\u2019m standing (and) applauding.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou got him off the field, amazing. That\u2019s a beautiful piece of play. That is rugby league.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can go back now and sit down, Belinda Sharpe has the last laugh, but they\u2019ve done the switcheroo with the identical twins.<\/p>\n
\u201cA brilliant piece of rugby league right there.<\/p>\n
