Australia is set to take centre stage in world sport once again with strong government backing confirmed for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup (RLWC), which will kick off in Sydney this October.<\/p>\n
The Australian Government has announced a $12.4 million investment to support the planning, logistics, and delivery of the tournament, which will be co-hosted across Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea.<\/p>\n
The funding will assist in delivering one of the largest international rugby league events ever staged in the region, featuring 26 teams from 16 nations competing across 51 matches over five weeks. The tournament will include standalone men\u2019s, women\u2019s, and wheelchair competitions, highlighting the sport\u2019s growing inclusivity and global reach.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the event will showcase Australia\u2019s passion for rugby league and strengthen community engagement across host nations.<\/p>\n
\u201cAustralians love rugby league and this World Cup is a chance to show that to the world,\u201d the Prime Minister said.
\u201cThis is about packed stadiums, local jobs, children seeing their heroes up close and communities coming together around a game they love.\u201d<\/p>\n
Minister for Sport Anika Wells emphasised the importance of the tournament in promoting participation in sport, particularly for women and girls.<\/p>\n
She noted that women\u2019s rugby league continues to grow rapidly, and the World Cup will provide a powerful platform to inspire the next generation of athletes.<\/p>\n
A key feature of the tournament will be double-header matches, where men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams share the same stage, offering fans a broader showcase of elite rugby league talent.<\/p>\n
The event is also being positioned as part of Australia\u2019s broader sporting strategy in the lead-up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, reinforcing the country\u2019s reputation as a world leader in hosting international sporting events.<\/p>\n
