Banks including the United Kingdom\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starlingbank.com\/safe-phrases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Starling<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commbank.com.au\/articles\/newsroom\/2026\/01\/can-australians-spot-deepfake-scams.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Commonwealth Bank of Australia<\/a> have warned customers to watch out for voice cloning scams.\n    <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpoirzhr00033b6remxhtoqz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Experts say AI voice replicas have gotten so realistic that most people can no longer reliably distinguish them from real human voices.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpoirzhr00043b6r6c52gbtg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFor the everyday person, it is just not fair to expect them to be able to spot this stuff,\u201d said Henry Ajder, an expert on AI-generated media who consults for governments and companies. \u201cI struggle with it. Most people do.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpoirzhr00063b6rbilhuavr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Scammers can create an AI replica of someone\u2019s voice using a short recording of their speech \u2014 often pulled from social media or an earlier scam call that was surreptitiously recorded. Social media can also provide a trove of information about family members and close friends who could be targeted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpoirzhr00073b6r5t6g1wks@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Fraudsters will typically make it sound like the loved one they\u2019re mimicking is in distress, purportedly having been kidnapped or in jail. Then they\u2019ll urgently demand money in exchange for their loved one\u2019s release.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpoirzhr00083b6r8a5ov646@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere was no time to think,\u201d Gary Schildhorn, a Philadelphia attorney who was targeted by an AI voice scam mimicking his son, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/audio\/podcasts\/terms-of-service-with-clare-duffy\/episodes\/9fe98d50-96cf-11ef-aa1b-07ca04432229\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told CNN last year<\/a>. \u201cIt was all, \u2018I have to react to help my son. He\u2019s in trouble.\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpoirzhr00093b6r5ux6pfoo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In some cases, the AI voice may be more than just a single recording. Sophisticated attackers could use text-to-speech tools or \u201cvoice skinning,\u201d which manipulate a scammer\u2019s voice so they sound like the person they\u2019re imitating in real time. Those techniques facilitate back-and-forth conversations between the target and the AI clone voice, potentially making the scam more convincing, Ajder said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpoirzhr000a3b6rvigb3vss@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hackers can also make it appear as if a call is coming from a known number through a tactic known as caller ID spoofing \u2014 so you can\u2019t necessarily trust that a call that appears to be coming from your mom is indeed her.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpoirzhr000c3b6rvjx5mik4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Strange pauses or vocal fluctuations were previously considered red flags that a caller\u2019s voice might be AI-generated.  But those signals may no longer be present now that AI has advanced.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpoirzhr000d3b6rx24waemp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Instead of trying to determine whether a voice is authentic, look for other general scam warning signs, Hany Farid, a professor at UC Berkeley and chief science officer at GetReal Security, told CNN last year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpoirzhr000e3b6rdposcaq6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Is the person on the other end giving a deadline or introducing a sense of urgency? Are they encouraging you not to tell anyone else what\u2019s happening? Are they asking you to move large sums of money in unusual ways? Those are the types of questions experts say to keep in mind.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpoirzhr000f3b6rfci3b7rt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Targets who receive these types of calls should try contacting their loved one through other means, such as via a text message, calling them on another person\u2019s phone or reaching out to someone who would know where they are.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpoirzhr000g3b6rk2orvuwu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Deborah Del Mastro, the California mom recently targeted, told <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7news.com\/about\/newsteam\/dryden-quigley\/?userab=kabc_content_recs-577*variant_c_trending-2482,otv_web_content_rec-539*variant_c_trending-2268,otv_search_page_design_unification-546*variant_b_search_redesign-2300,abcn_popular_reads_exp-542*variant_b_7days_filter-2288\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ABC7 News<\/a> that she called her daughter only after sending money to the scammers. Her daughter answered right away and was at work.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpoirzhr000h3b6r8t5f90h6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Families or coworkers can also establish a precautionary \u201ccode word\u201d that can be used to verify each other\u2019s identity.
