I\u2019ve got a lot of faith in this group, I should have, shouldn\u2019t I? They\u2019ve played in finals the last seven years, they\u2019ve gone to the big dance three years in a row, so there\u2019s something there to work with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve just got to find it, I don\u2019t know whether they\u2019re a bit tired from all those efforts over the last few years, it\u2019s really hard to work out \u2013 there are just so many things that aren\u2019t going quite right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Related Article<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/sport\/afl\/this-local-footy-club-has-lost-four-men-to-suicide-here-s-what-they-want-you-to-know-20260525-p600fc.html\" tabindex=\"-1\" class=\"sc-cba76dee-0 hdiTqm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sam Waldron says a lot of men open up about their mental health once arriving at Hawthorn FC.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/08fa49dc740de0d1d912d52165f0f10a2ee92679.jpeg\"  class=\"sc-d34e428-1 ioInpc\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not that there was a lack of signs of fight, as Brisbane picked up the pace in the final quarter to make a game of it \u2013 goals to Charlie Cameron, Will Ashcroft (two each for the match), Jaspa Fletcher and Sam Draper suddenly bringing them back to within 18-points inside the final two-and-a-half minutes.<\/p>\n<p>That was before Josh Treacy nailed his third maximum to secure Fremantle\u2019s club record-breaking 11th straight wait in their hunt for a maiden piece of silverware.<\/p>\n<p>It will now take a significant period of soul-searching and a miraculous return to form if Brisbane are to keep their hopes of a third-straight title \u2013 and emulating their most successful era as a club of 2001 to 2003 \u2013 alive.<\/p>\n<p>Zorko void grows bigger<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/sport\/afl\/how-zorko-s-absence-exposed-lions-void-and-announced-cats-as-a-flag-favourite-20260514-p5zx51.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zorko void in the Lions\u2019 backline is only getting bigger,<\/a> and has left the club in the midst of a desperate search to find a man capable of filling his shoes.<\/p>\n<p>His quad concern, having only recently returned from a calf issue, is a setback which could seriously hamper any hopes the 36-year-old may have of extending his career into a 16th season.<\/p>\n<p>In his absence, Brisbane have been badly exposed in defence, while their ball movement up the field has paled in comparison to their premiership-winning exploits.<\/p>\n<p>Zorko has so often been that conductor from the back, but without him, the Lions were devoid of answers as the Dockers applied significant forward pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Without Zorko navigating his side out of trouble, Brisbane have been unable to get the best out of their all-star midfield, with Lachie Neale (23 touches), Ashcroft (22), Hugh McCluggage (13) and Josh Dunkley (16) all brilliantly contained.<\/p>\n<p>Zac Bailey attempted to spark his side, leading the disposal count with 30 while kicking a goal and producing six clearances, but it would all be in vain.<\/p>\n<p>When Brisbane did probe inside 50, they lacked execution \u2013 only just nudging their efficiency beyond 50 per cent courtesy of their fourth quarter charge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just didn\u2019t have the quality of entry there to really finish off, whereas at the other end they had 12 less than us but scored at 60 per cent from their entries. We did get supply in there, we did have a really healthy number of forward half turnovers \u2026 but we weren\u2019t able to use the ball off those turnovers to create a score,\u201d Fagan said.<\/p>\n<p>Longmuir\u2019s emotional tribute<\/p>\n<p>Dockers coach Justin Longmuir paid tribute to the late Neale Daniher, <a class=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/national\/neale-daniher-to-be-farewelled-in-state-funeral-20260528-p601rk.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who lost his battle with motor neurone disease this week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The former Melbourne coach served as an assistant at Fremantle before launching a 223-game tenure at the Demons\u2019 helm, with Longmuir alluding to their shared time at the West Coast Eagles as a major influence on his career.<\/p>\n<p>Daniher\u2019s fundraising endeavours with FightMND raised more than $115 million towards research for a cure, with the AFL\u2019s Big Freeze becoming a staple of the season calendar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s been well documented the impact he\u2019s had on our footy club, especially in the early days when we probably did it at its toughest, and to have people around like that to get us off the ground allows us to be where we are now,\u201d Longmuir said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always had such great respect for everything that Neale has taught me. He was so succinct with the messages sometimes that you just couldn\u2019t not take them on board.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had a loveble way about him \u2013 his laugh and storytelling, but also had great wisdom when it came to coaching.
