(YouTube: NASAJPL Edu)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Moon itself doesn&#8217;t change; a micromoon will just look slightly smaller than a regular full moon looks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A supermoon looks slightly bigger.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It&#8217;ll be difficult to see the difference in apparent size when you look up at the Moon tonight, but it&#8217;s noticeable in comparison images such as the one posted on <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap260530.html\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA&#8217;s popular Astronomy Picture of the Day blog<\/a> over the weekend.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The image is made up two different photos taken by Soumyadeep Mukherjee months apart.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">On the left is a supermoon taken in December 2021, while the right is a micromoon in May, 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Two moons.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/3e5cd7acaf8cd75b9ea7cfe4225c9b7c.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Soumyadeep Mukherjee&#8217;s photos of the Moon were taken months apart in 2021. (Supplied: Soumyadeep Mukherjee)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Mukherjee said he used the &#8220;same camera, same lens and same focal\u00a0length in order to keep the image scale the same&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This ensured that the size comparison between the two moons are kept the same.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He took both photos in Kolkata, eastern India,\u00a0where May can mean cloudy weather, which can complicate lunar photography.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I was rather nervous in the month of May, which is just before the monsoon arrives,&#8221; Mr Mukherjee said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;But luckily, I was able to capture both the moons with clear skies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Smallest&#8217; micromoon of the year<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Part of the reason tonight&#8217;s full moon is generating so much social media buzz is because it&#8217;ll be the smallest micromoon of the year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Just after sunset, a full moon will appear slightly smaller and dimmer than usual,&#8221; the editors of <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap260530.html\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Astronomy Picture of of the Day blog wrote<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;In fact, tonight&#8217;s micromoon will be the farthest, smallest, and dimmest moon this year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">This month&#8217;s full moon will occur when the Moon is 406,368 kilometres from Earth, <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.universetoday.com\/articles\/why-the-second-full-moon-of-may-is-a-blue-minimoon\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Dickenson explained for The Universe Today<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rare pairing with a blue moon<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Tonight&#8217;s micromoon will also be what&#8217;s called a blue moon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In this context, a blue moon refers a second full moon in a calendar month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">NASA says blue moons usually only happen\u00a0every two to three years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But for a blue moon to occur at the same time as a micromoon is pretty rare.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Although the next micromoon occurs next month, and the next blue moon at the end of 2028, the next blue micromoon will not occur until 2053,&#8221; the Astronomy Picture of the Day blog says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The last micromoon and blue moon was in October 2020, Mr Dickenson said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He called tonight&#8217;s full moon a &#8220;last in a generation&#8221; part in the phrase &#8220;blue moon&#8221; has nothing to do with the colouring of the Moon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It&#8217;s believed to have come from an article in an astronomy\u00a0magazine in the 1940s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;This colourful term is actually a calendrical goof that worked its way into the pages of Sky &amp; Telescope back in March 1946, and it spread to the world from there,&#8221;\u00a0Kelly Beatty wrote in <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/skyandtelescope.org\/press-releases\/uh-oh-a-blue-moon-ends-the-oos\/\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/externallink\/102775850\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an article published on the magazine&#8217;s website in 2009<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Sky &amp; Telescope explained that its writer James Hugh Pruett &#8220;made an incorrect assumption about how the term had been used in the Maine Farmers&#8217; Almanac&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Old Farmer&#8217;s Almanac\u00a0is an American annual magazine that contains things like weather pattern forecasts, moon phases and gardening tips.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But the Moon has appeared to be blue in colour before, with NASA pointing to a famous example from 1883.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;People saw blue moons almost every night after the Indonesian volcano Krakatoa exploded with the force of a 100-megaton nuclear bomb,&#8221;
