But for the Broncos, their woes are building week by week.

Michael Maguire’s side’s last win came way back in Round 8 against the Bulldogs, but since then they’ve lost to the Roosters, Sea Eagles, Warriors and now the struggling Red V.

So where is it going wrong for them?

Yes, they have a mountain of injuries, with Corey Jensen, Deine Mariner, Jordan Riki and Billy Walters all sidelined.

But that doesn’t excuse the crucial errors and lacklustre attack on display against a side who have one of the worst defensive records in the competition.

“They had a win the Dragons and good on them, they deserved it. But the Broncos, at the start of the year they were title contenders,” Nathan Hindmarsh said on Sunday Night with Matty Johns.

“But today’s game, the amount of errors they made, the lack of patience they showed, the pushing of passes.

“They were panicking.”

The Broncos made 14 errors against the Dragons, conceded seven penalties and also completed at only 73 per cent.

But with 52 per cent of the possession, including 65 per cent in the last 10, to go with six line breaks and five set restarts — Brisbane had every chance to win the game.

But it was the final pass and attacking decision making that let them down and left Michael Maguire scratching his head in the post-match press conference.

Michael Maguire was scratching his head.Source: Supplied Source Known

“Very disappointing. Had a good prep, but we didn’t match their intent, that was the disappointing part.

“The commitment in areas of our game that we hold pretty high, we didn’t hit the mark today.

“That’s something that we as a group, myself, everyone need to find that really quickly because there is a talented team there and we all know that

“That’s my role now with the senior leaders and everyone involved to find it.”

Meanwhile, superstar prop Payne Haas delivered his own damning assessment.

“We’re all talk at the moment,” Haas told ABC Sport after the game.

“We keep on saying we’re going to do all these important things on the field, but to be honest, we’re just BS-ing each other.”

However, one thing that does bode well for the Broncos is their 2025 campaign.

Struggling mid-way through the year, Maguire’s men found form and surged to win a premiership — but Maguire was confident history shouldn’t be a factor for his team’s current predicament.

“If we’re relying on past history, we might find ourselves in a bit of bother,” Maguire added.

“Everyone can tell you a good story of the past but it’s what you’re doing right now and that’s the disappointing part.

“You can compare stories but I’ve never seen two years the same. Foran now faces a fresh challenge in his so far successful yet short coaching career.

However, as said post-game on Fox League, there were still some positive moments.

Kieran Foran will face the biggest test of his coaching career.Source: FOX SPORTS

“Obviously, whatever he (Foran) said at half-time had an impact, because they were better in the second half and they scored a try eight minutes into the second half,” former premiership and State of Origin winning halfback Cooper Cronk said.

“Now Kieran Foran’s got a little bit of work to do. The game against Penrith they lost, there was an argument to say they probably should have won that game.

“I think it’s just a bit more of a reset. They’ve been up for a long period of time.”

“The biggest challenge for rookie coaches is when you lose, how do you react, and how you handle those losses and move forward?,” Fox League host Braith Anasta continued.

“He’s (Foran) been faultless so far, and he’s been amazing, I expect him to continue in that vein of form.

Luke Brooks will need to lead the team with his experience.Source: Getty Images

However, despite the near-blemish-free start to his coaching career, Panthers legend Greg Alexander says this is still uncharted territory.

“But he’s got no history to fall back on, does he? Only his history as a player,” Alexander added on Fox League.

“We all know Kieran pretty well; we know what a character he is. We had opportunities to score and we just didn’t.

“In this day and age of rugby league, you have to be able to score points. Every single time Galvin touched the ball, went for a tackle, even ran onto the field, the majority of the 17,505 people in attendance let him have it, booing endlessly for the duration of the 80 minutes.

Not that Galvin took much notice.

“He was fine. I don’t know if he notices to be honest but it’s what’s going to make him a very good football player down the track is that he deals with this stuff all the time,” Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo.

Galvin was relentlessly booed by fans of his former team.Source: Getty Images

Galvin has endured a huge amount of pressure, criticism and spotlight ever since the controversial move to the Bulldogs – much of it arguably unfounded. The 20-year-old has let his football do the talking, imposing a media ban on himself and keeping a low profile wherever possible.

Despite that, the Bulldogs continue to sing the praises of Galvin and his future greatness at every opportunity.

Saturday was no different.

“He deals with people talking about him. I get it, it’s footy, but he’ll be a better player for it,” Ciraldo said after the game, doubling down on Galvin’s potential.

“It’s just footy. It’s tribal, we love our clubs, we love our teams, we love our players and that stuff comes out. It’ll die off eventually but he’ll be better for it.”

Tigers coach Benji Marshall understandably wanted no part in the fans reaction, but said fans generally have long memories.

“You have to ask the fans,” Marshall said. “You can’t tell them how to feel but they never forget, that’s the problem. In a post-match interview, he welcomed the prospect of joining the Blues with both hands.

According to Fox League’s Kevin Walters, Koroisau deserves his shot at a recall.

“The inclusion of Api Koroisau lifted the spirits of the Tigers players,” said Walters. “They defended really well and their attack was great off the back of that.

Koroisau is the lead contender to replace the injured Blayke Brailey.Source: Getty Images

“It’s a strong performance and one the Tigers needed as well.

“I think Api would be the standout contender for me. He got a bit gassed in the game but he’s a classy footballer. You can see the energy and the football knowledge he brings to the Tigers.”

Brailey played 31 minutes off the bench and provided a crucial try-assist for Nathan Cleary during Origin I.

Koroisau, 33, has played four Origin games for NSW, but none since 2023. He was seemingly in contention to be picked for Game 1 before he copped the three-game suspension.

“They [the Blues] want a dynamic player to come on and Koroisau probably fits that mould a little bit more. I think Wayde Egan deserves the jumper… and Connor Watson has done the job before,” said former Queensland half Cooper Cronk.

“If I had to choose someone, I’d probably go Wayde Egan. Three weeks ago the Roosters were flying,” Cooper Cronk said on Fox League’s Super Saturday.

“They were the team that probably adapted to the fast ruck speed better than most and the way they did it, it was Robson then Tedesco running when there was a quick play the ball.

“They weren’t playing these plays that were trying to break down the opposition but the last couple of weeks, defensively, they’ve missed tackles, catching the ball errors and gone away from that ruck speed and generating the quick play the balls.”

Not only has their execution dropped off, but they have had multiple lapses on both ends of the field, which has seen them make simple handing errors and fail to make tackles that they are normally able to do.

Robbo SLAMS ‘poor’ Roosters after loss | 03:58

“The Roosters will be there. They will go through this period of time with six missed Origin players, but there are some fundamentals that are quick and easy to fix,” Cronk continued.

“Catch and pass, holding the ball errors, they’re pretty simple to fix. It’s individual accountability when you have the ball.”

The fix to their problem is not complex.

Rather than needing a complete structural overhaul, all they need to do is to return to the rugby league basics.

“It may be a little tough period through the Origin because Sam Walker and Rob Toia are pretty inexperienced when it comes to Origin football and backing up and getting your body ready, week in, week out to play,” Kangaroos coach Kevin Walters said.

“So that might be a little turbulence, but once they get through Origin and set sail for home they’ll be one of the teams that can challenge the Penrith, Warriors and Broncos.”

Speaking after their loss to the Storm, enforcer Victor Radley admitted that the team need to take on individual accountability for their missteps.

“Disappointing. We had a chance in that second half and we weren’t good enough,” Radley said on Fox League.

“We want to stick to our style (of footy). It’s just on the individual. When it’s your moment, just finish the play, play the ball (and) get it done.”

WEBSTER STRIVES FOR MORE AFTER LITMUS TEST

Billed as the match of the round, the 1st v 2nd clash between the Panthers and Warriors was the first match up this season betweenteams holding the top two spots on the ladder.

It seemed to lose a little bit of its lustre when it was announced that Penrith would’nt’ be backing up Brian To’o, Isaah Yeo and Nathan Cleary from Origin, but those omissions did nothing to dampen the quality of the game.

It what lived up to it’s billing, the Panthers and Warriors produced an outstanding, see-sawing contest which ended in Penrith gripping on for a 20-18 win.

Even without those three Penrith stars, this was a good yardstick for the Warriors to prove they are the real deal.

Despite the loss, they still sit 2nd, now four points adrift of the Panthers, who have only dropped one game this year.

In clear sign the Warriors won’t just be content with a deep finals run this season, coach Andrew Webster lamented his side letting Sunday’s game slip through their fingers.

“We were so good for long periods, but not for 80. That was probably the issue,” Webster said.

“We probably played some of our best football, but we had moments where they hurt us, on last plays particularly.

“There were just moments we looked likely and looked in control and then we’d let them off the hook and they’re too good that they punish us.

“We’re trending in the right direction, but we just didn’t put in an 80-minute performance together.”

Panthers hold out Warriors in an epic | 03:37

A highlight of the Warriors’ performance was the play of the back five.

Led by fullback’s Taine Tuaupiki, the Warriors’ back five averaged 141 metres and six tackle busts.

It’ll be hard to drop or demote any one of them, but gun centre Rocco Berry is close to an NRL return and he’s sure to give Webster something to think about.

Berry has been hit hard by injuries over the past couple of seasons but when he’s healthy and in form, he can be one of the league’s most all-around centres.

He’ll have to work hard to earn a recall though.

“We’ve been pretty settled through form. Like, whoever plays has been playing good football, and they’ve been keeping their spots,” Webster said.

“Rocco Berry returned in reserve grade today, so he’s back pressing, but no, really happy with our back five and what they’re doing.

“I thought we were tearing them apart on kick returns, and that’s hard to do against Penrith, so I was pretty proud of that back five’s performance.”

The Broncos are spiralling, and one of the club’s stars called out his team following their embarrassing loss…

[568
64,63,761,762,158,85
post-707013","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nrl","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-national-rugby-league","tag-nationalrugbyleague","tag-nrl","tag-sports
["GET
