Well then, how can we not make changes? I think we have to. There’s some players we should look at.”

Blayke Brailey’s injury during Cronulla’s win over Manly on Friday opens a hooking spot in the NSW side, and according to Johns, that should be the first order of business for Daley: recalling 33-year-old rake Api Koroisau into the starting line-up, pushing Game I starter Reece Robson onto the bench.

“He’s my Origin hooker. Experience, toughness, creativity,” said Johns.

“I think [he starts in place of Robson]. I think you need a little bit more creativity for our yardage early in the game. I think it’s a no-brainer, he’s played with a lot of those guys before, easily performed combination and if he wasn’t suspended before he would have been in game one.”

Get all the latest NRL news, highlights and analysis delivered straight to your inbox with Fox Sports Sportmail. Sign up now!!!

How will Origin impact the Roosters? | 02:08

If Api’s inclusion is the priority, then the Blues centre options are an obvious second, according to Johns.

With confirmation over the weekend that South Sydney’s Latrell Mitchell has once again been ruled out for Blues selection due to injury, Daley has some difficult decisions to make.

For Johns, the obvious choice is to demote Kotoni Staggs from the starting side and bring Casey McLean on as left centre, pushing Stephen Crichton into right centre. Doing so will help mitigate Ponga’s attacking dominance with the ball in hand.

“I’d look at putting Casey McLean into the starting side. If Latrell is not there, I’d put Casey McLean on the left and I’d put Stephen Crichton on the right,” Johns said.

“My opinion is that Casey Mclean comes onto the starting side somewhere. For me I don’t think we win if he doesn’t come onto the football field: his impact and the way he attacked the game it was one of the best debuts I’ve seen.

“I thought he [Kotoni] struggled handling Kalyn. Now, 90 per cent of players would but Crichton is a defensive specialist.”

The final piece of the puzzle is Payne Haas. The 26-year-old has been an automatic Blues selection during recent campaigns, but was ruled out of Game I with injury.

During the Broncos loss to St George Illawarra on Sunday, the Brisbane prop showed exactly why he’s Origin material, with 19 runs, 252 metres, nine tackle busts, one line break and 31 tackles.

MORE NRL NEWS

CRAWLS: Young stars who must be picked in ELEVEN changes for Origin II

TALKING PTS: Broncos ‘BS’ exposed; NSW bolter’s stunning statement

Should Lucas get an Origin promotion? | 02:09

“It goes without saying that Payne Haas comes back into the side,” said Johns.

The Blues biggest pain point in their past three Origin appearances has been poor starts, and it was Queensland who had the wood on them during the opening exchanges of Game I in Sydney.

The Blues put up five errors and 23 missed tackles in the first half alone, while their inferior line speed was exposed against a resilient Queensland side.

According to Fox League’s Bryan Fletcher, the aforementioned changes will help NSW to address their slow starts.

“It’s been the last three games,” said the former Blue. “We seem to get stuck in the barriers… I’m not sure what happens in the warm-up but it happened in the last two games last year and now it’s happened again here.”

While some of the Blues players were far from their best against Queensland, the fact they managed to overcome Queensland means most players should be retained, according to former Blue Nathan Hindmarsh.

ORIGIN DAILY: Radical Brailey replacement floated; Ponga reveals gruesome injury

McLean stars again after Origin debut | 06:59

“It’s so tough, at the end of the day they won the game so I think they should be picked,” he said.

“There was a few guys that I was expecting a bit more from.
