{"id":707521,"date":"2026-06-01T03:57:41","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T03:57:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/707521\/"},"modified":"2026-06-01T03:57:41","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T03:57:41","slug":"legends-assemble-for-all-star-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/707521\/","title":{"rendered":"Legends assemble for all-star event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE 30th anniversary Leyburn Sprints is set to be highlighted by the Night with the Stars, Under the Stars, featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.v8sleuth.com.au\/stats-driver-250-Dick-Johnson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dick Johnson<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.v8sleuth.com.au\/stats-driver-149-John-Bowe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Bowe<\/a>, Bruce Allison, Charlie O\u2019Brien, Kevin Bartlett, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.v8sleuth.com.au\/stats-driver-312-Colin-Bond\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Colin Bond<\/a>, Bap Romano and Steve Masterton.<\/p>\n<p>The event, scheduled for Thursday, August 13, will be held at the 100-year-old Ellangowan Woolshed, owned by local farmer and rugby league legend Shane Webcke.<\/p>\n<p>Weekend Australian motoring columnist and Historic Leyburn Sprints competitor John Connolly will be the special guest speaker.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/superstore.v8sleuth.com.au\/products\/v8-sleuth-magazine-issue-4?utm_source=website&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=buy-button&amp;utm_content=buy-button\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/sleuth-mag-04_9e8e35e7-2237-44e2-a0d0-d906a6f0e0b6_1024x1024.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The event, originally organised to celebrate the 1949 Australian Grand Prix, contested on a nearby RAAF landing strip, has since carved out its own special place on the motorsport calendar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t done anything like this before.\u00a0It\u2019s going to be a wonderful night of entertainment, great food and drinks and traditional Sprints camaraderie before the big weekend kicks off on Friday,\u201d said Tricia Chant, Leyburn Sprints President.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cTwo years ago, we celebrated the 75th\u00a0anniversary of the 1949 Leyburn Australian Grand Prix. This year we mark the foundation of the Sprints in 1996 by a committee of local people and the\u00a0Historic Racing Car Club of Queensland.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cWho could imagine\u00a0the Sprints would grow to what it has become today \u2013 an historic racing festival with its roots in an Australian Grand Prix, twice awarded Queensland Motorsport Event of the Year and renowned throughout the country for its unique spectacle and grassroots atmosphere.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cThe Sprints also has attracted a prestigious inventory of sponsors, from State and local governments to many regional businesses. We\u2019re graced every year also by a number of great drivers from\u00a0past and present\u00a0eras as\u00a0our VIP guests.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cThe weekend population of tiny Leyburn swells to around 18,000 people, including thousands of campers.
