It has been 27 years since the New York Knicks made the NBA<\/a> Finals. Their opponent back then? San Antonio Spurs.<\/p>\n

The 2026 edition will run it back to 1999 for another matchup between the two. For the Knicks, there is hope that history will be rewritten after the Spurs won the series 4-1 nearly three decades ago.<\/p>\n

Despite the long wait for the Finals, they are filled with more experienced heads.<\/p>\n

There is no doubt they are up against the Spurs\u2019 Victor Wembanyama<\/a>\u2019s time and team.<\/p>\n

The series MVP and 7\u20192 star is front and centre of the franchise, but, at 22, he and other Spurs stars – including Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper -have all experienced their first taste of the playoffs over the last few weeks.<\/p>\n

It was no small feat to knock out the reigning champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder.<\/p>\n

Wembanyama\u2019s monumental example started with a magnificent 41-point, 24-rebound, and 28-foot signature three-pointer that forced overtime in Game 1. He became the youngest ever player to record a 40-20 game in the playoffs, but whilst his Game 5 was quiet, any doubt that the opener was a fluke was quickly shut down.<\/p>\n

In statement wins in Games 6 and 7, he hauled his side to a come-from-behind series win with 28 and 22 points, respectively.<\/p>\n

It would be a disservice to say that he has been a lone wolf in Spurs success.<\/p>\n

They displayed their collective strength in their Game 7 clincher.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnsung hero<\/a>\u201d Julian Champagnie\u00a0scored 20 points, including six three-pointers, in what may cap off a fairytale career breakthrough for the 24-year-old. Rookie guard Harper has also become a rising star of the season.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey don\u2019t know how much I love them, and everyone stepped up tonight,\u201d an emotional Wembanyama said of his teammates after making the Finals.<\/p>\n

The Knicks, by comparison, had a less turbulent time in the Eastern Conference, sweeping past the Cleveland Cavaliers 4-0.<\/p>\n

They are on a winning streak of the greatest 11-game stretch the NBA has ever seen, with a point differential of +262.<\/p>\n

Having built their side around 2022 free agent-turned-Knicks-nucleus<\/a> Jalen Brunson, the 29-year-old averaged 27.8 points and 6.7 assists in the postseason, earning Eastern Conference MVP status.<\/p>\n

He averaged 26 points in three meetings against\u00a0the Spurs during the regular season and will be the catalyst for the Knicks’ hopes.<\/p>\n

Veteran guard Josh Hart and five-time All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns \u2013 who is having a career-best defensive season this year, averaging 13.8 rebounds per 36 minutes – have also shone in the Knicks\u2019 late-season renaissance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It has been 27 years since the New York Knicks made the NBA Finals.
