Guillermo Del Toro<\/a> has joined the chorus of critics heaping praise on the new Apple TV+ horror comedy series Widow\u2019s Bay<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Oscar-winning The Shape of Water director gave a glowing review to the 10-episode show, which stars Matthew Rhys <\/a>as a small-town New England mayor desperate to boost tourism on his struggling island that locals are convinced is cursed. Dale Dickey, Kevin Carroll, Stephen Root, Kate O\u2019Flynn and Kingston Rumi Southwick also feature.<\/p>\n

Writing on X, Del Toro said<\/a>: \u201cIf I may- in my estimation- #WidowsBay may very well be the best streaming series in a long time\u2026 and hands down one of the most mesmerizing acts of narrative prestidigitation in Horror.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPrestidigitation\u201d refers to the performance of close-up magic, often known as \u201csleight of hand.\u201d<\/p>\n

Del Toro subsequently retweeted another user<\/a> who also praised the show by writing: \u201cThis show is so perfect. I love the comedy horror balance and the characters are fascinating. I\u2019m on the flashback episode and it\u2019s like stumbling upon a great horror movie! There\u2019s so many SECRETS I can\u2019t wait to find out what\u2019s going on with this island.\u201d<\/p>\n

Del Toro is not alone in loving the new show, which earned a coveted 100 percent score on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes soon after making its debut.<\/a><\/p>\n

Reviewers singled out Rhys\u2019s \u201ctop-notch physical comedy\u201d as one of the show\u2019s greatest strengths, while also struggling to categorize the show within a specific genre, instead labeling it \u201csingular.\u201d<\/p>\n

Acknowledging that \u201ccomedy-horror might be a genre that\u2019s tricky to get right,\u201d RadioTimes<\/a>\u2019s Louise Griffin applauded Widow\u2019s Bay as a \u201cneat, off-beat offering\u201d that \u201cgets that balance just right.\u201d<\/p>\n

In her four-star review, Griffin praised the show\u2019s \u201ctwists, reveals and outright surreal moments.\u201d \u201cIn a sea of TV series competing to be the most cinematic production on the small screen, it\u2019s refreshing to see Apple TV invest in a small-town comedy that scales things right back,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

Similarly, Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter <\/a>commended Rhys for \u201canchoring\u201d the \u201cintriguingly creepy, oddly cozy [and] unevenly effective horror-comedy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAt its best, Widow\u2019s Bay highlights the blurry line between comedy and horror,\u201d Han added. \u201cBut if Widow\u2019s Bay excels at setting a tone of pervasive oddness … it\u2019s less reliable at converting that tension into catharsis.\u201d<\/p>\n
