{"id":708631,"date":"2026-06-01T16:55:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T16:55:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/708631\/"},"modified":"2026-06-01T16:55:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T16:55:08","slug":"international-cricket-council-suspends-cricket-canadas-membership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/708631\/","title":{"rendered":"International Cricket Council suspends Cricket Canada\u2019s membership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Cricket\u2019s world governing body has suspended Cricket Canada\u2019s membership \u201cdue to serious breaches of its membership obligations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Canadian teams will still be eligible to compete during the suspension, however.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The decision was made by the International Cricket Council\u2019s board on Sunday in Ahmedabad, India. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">While the ICC did not specify the nature of the breaches, Cricket Canada has had to deal with leadership turmoil, lawsuits and a damning portrayal in a recent episode of the CBC\u2019s The Fifth Estate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The ICC confirmed that its anti-corruption unit was investigating allegations raised in the April program titled \u201cCorruption, Crime and Cricket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThe ACU is aware of the program broadcast by CBC,\u201d Andrew Ephgrave, interim general manager of the ICC\u2019s integrity unit, told The Associated Press in a statement at the time. \u201cConsistent with its established operating procedures, the ACU is not in a position to comment on the substance of any allegations contained within it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/sports\/article-monty-desai-named-canadas-mens-coach-amid-turbulent-time-for-cricket\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Monty Desai named Canada\u2019s men\u2019s coach amid turbulent time for Cricket Canada<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The documentary also included other allegations of corruption within Cricket Canada. Former Canada coach Pubudu Dassanayake alleged there was undue influence on the team selection process during the 2024 T20 World Cup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The ICC said Canadian teams will continue to be eligible to compete, saying its board \u201cwas mindful of the importance of protecting the interests of Canadian players and ensuring they are not disadvantaged by the governance issues affecting the national governing body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cTo support the continued participation and development of the national teams, Cricket Canada will be permitted to access ICC funding through a controlled funding mechanism, under the oversight of ICC management, solely for approved national team program,\u201d the ICC added in its statement Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The world governing body says it will provide Cricket Canada with \u201ca set of reinstatement conditions aimed at addressing the governance and administrative issues identified by the board.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThe progress against these conditions will be monitored by the ICC Normalization Committee, supported by ICC management, with reinstatement of membership subject to the board being satisfied that the conditions have been fully met.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">According to the latest financial statement on the Cricket Canada website, the organization reported total revenue of $3,176,869 for the year ending Dec. 31, 2023. Of that, $1,393,783 came from the ICC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/article-sport-is-canadian-its-time-to-start-acting-like-it\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Opinion: Sport is Canadian. It\u2019s time to start acting like it<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Cricket Canada did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the ICC decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">But in a statement on the eve of The Fifth Estate show airing, it said it would review its allegations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cRecent (CBC) promotional material alludes to allegations related to organized crime and match-fixing \u2013 issues that Cricket Canada takes extremely seriously,\u201d the statement said. \u201cThe integrity of the sport is fundamental, and any concern that could compromise fair competition is treated with the utmost importance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The statement also noted Cricket Canada had recently undergone leadership changes, including the election of a new president and secretary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThe organization is focused on strengthening governance and continuing to build for the future of the sport in this country. This work is grounded in a clear commitment to integrity, transparency, and open communication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Cricket Canada also said it was undertaking \u201ca review of its integrity-related processes to ensure they meet the standards expected of a national sporting body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In March, 2025, then-Cricket Canada CEO Salman Khan and another man were charged with theft and fraud over $5,000 arising from their time with the Calgary and District Cricket League.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Khan, in a social-media post via the Alberta Cricket Association, called the allegations \u201ccompletely false.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Cricket Canada suspended Khan in October, albeit with full pay, before firing him in December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Another legal case saw B.C.\u2019s West Coast Cricket Organization and three other provincial cricket groups allege Cricket Canada broke its own constitution and bylaws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In March, a B.C. Supreme Court judge ordered Cricket Canada to hold a special general meeting with an independent arbitrator, as requested by the petitioners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Justice David Crerar called the dispute \u201cacrimonious, contentious and complex\u201d and said it was \u201cdriven by egos,\u201d the Vancouver Sun reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">He also ordered Cricket Canada to end its suspension of the Alberta Cricket Association.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Cricket Canada is an associate member of the ICC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Canadian men are currently ranked 20th in both one-day international and T20 play.
