Madden began his pro football coaching career in 1967 as the Oakland Raiders\u2019 linebackers coach. He was elevated to head coach two seasons later, making him the youngest head coach in the AFL. During his 10 seasons at the helm, Madden posted a .759 regular season winning percentage, the highest among coaches with 100 career victories.<\/p>\n
In 1979, Madden joined CBS as a color commentator and later spent time with Fox as a member of the \u201cA-Team\u201d of Pat Summerall, Bob Stenner and 2026 Pete Rozelle Radio-Television award winner Sandy Grossman. Madden later transitioned to ABC and was featured on \u201cMonday Night Football\u201d and to NBC for \u201cSunday Night Football.\u201d<\/p>\n
Madden was approached in 1984 by Trip Hawkins, who founded EA Sports, for advice and guidance in building the game. The longtime coach and then-broadcaster viewed the game as a way \u201cfor people to learn the game and participate in the game at a pretty sophisticated level,\u201d and remained adamant that the video game should authentically replicate the on-field product.<\/p>\n
Coach appeared on the cover of Madden for the first 12 editions. Tennessee Titans running back Eddie George became the first player to grace the cover of the game in 2001, a particularly transformative year for the franchise that also added European teams for the first time. Since then, Hall of Famers\u00a0MARSHALL FAULK<\/a>, RAY LEWIS<\/a>, BRETT FAVRE<\/a>, TROY POLAMALU<\/a>, LARRY FITZGERALD<\/a>, DREW BREES<\/a>, CALVIN JOHNSON<\/a>\u00a0and BARRY SANDERS<\/a> have been featured on various covers of the game.<\/p>\n \u201cCoach has always been a part of everything we do,\u201d Oldenburg said. \u201cHe holds a truly special place with our team, because without Coach\u2019s original vision, Madden NFL simply wouldn\u2019t exist nearly 40 years later.\u201d<\/p>\n Madden\u2019s legacy once again was featured in Madden 23, as he was returned to the cover of his namesake game following his passing in 2021.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen Coach passed in late 2021, said Oldenburg, \u201cit was immediately clear to all of us that bringing him back to the cover was the right way to honor his legacy.<\/p>\n \u201cAs we look to the future, Coach remains with us in spirit every day.
