Actor Rosamund Pike called out an audience member for texting during her performance of Inter Alia in London\u2019s West End on Saturday night (Sunday AEST).<\/p>\n

The Gone Girl star took a moment after the performance to politely address the audience about theatre etiquette and how an audience member texting during the show made her feel. According to The Times<\/a>, one member of the audience said they initially thought Pike came on stage for a solo ovation, but instead indicated that people should sit down.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just wanted to say, for anyone going to the theatre, it\u2019s a huge thing that we\u2019re trying to give you. I am trying to tell you a story, and I\u2019m feeling you, and I hope you\u2019re feeling me too,\u201d Pike said, \u00a0The Guardian reported.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cSomebody was texting in this part \u2013 you know who you are, and I\u2019m not going to single you out,\u201d she continued, gesturing to a portion of the audience.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe it was very important, and maybe you\u2019re a doctor, and you\u2019re saving someone\u2019s life, and I hope you are \u2013 but we do see these; we do feel them. I\u2019ve got you; I feel like I\u2019ve got to hold you all, so when I feel that and see it, it\u2019s hard.\u201d<\/p>\n

The BBC reported that<\/a> Pike\u2019s speech was met with a large round of applause.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Inter Alia, the work of award-winning Australian playwright Suzie Miller, was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play, with Pike taking home the best actress award.<\/a><\/p>\n

The story follows a prominent London Crown Court judge whose feminist and legal convictions are challenged when her teenage son is accused of sexual assault.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not the first time a prominent actor has called out audiences over device use in the theatre. In April, Lesley Manville, the award-winning actor, urged London theatregoers to put down their phones<\/a> while the cast took its final bows, suggesting taking video of the curtain call was an insult to the performers on stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome on, it\u2019s theatre; let\u2019s preserve it. Let\u2019s take the digital out of it for just a moment,\u201d Manville said during a performance of Les Liaisons Dangereuses at London\u2019s National Theatre.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are all in this room; we are telling you a story, you\u2019re listening \u2013 clap or don\u2019t clap, but don\u2019t just stick your phone in our face. I find it insulting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also in April, Wicked star Cynthia Erivo halted a performance of Dracula on the West End \u2013 in which she plays all 23 roles \u2013 when she spotted an audience member appearing to film the show.<\/p>\n

According to a commenter on the forum Theatreboard<\/a>, \u201c[Erivo] looked out into the audience and said: \u2018Are you filming? Is someone filming?\u2019 and stopped the show.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2017, Fleabag actor Andrew Scott halted his \u201cto be or not to be\u201d soliloquy while performing Hamlet at London\u2019s Almeida Theatre after an audience member pulled out their laptop.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was pausing and [the stage team] were like, \u2018Get on with it\u2019 and I was like, \u2018There\u2019s no way.\u2019 I stopped for ages,\u201d he recalled on the Happy Sad podcast in 2024.<\/a><\/p>\n

Inter Alia is the follow-up to Miller\u2019s 2019 play Prima Facie, which went on to the West End in 2022, winning Olivier awards in 2023 for best new play and best actress for its star Jodie Comer.<\/p>\n

It is now showing in a return season at Ros Packer Theatre with its originating star Sheridan Harbridge.<\/a><\/p>\n
