{"id":710297,"date":"2026-06-02T11:53:19","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T11:53:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/710297\/"},"modified":"2026-06-02T11:53:19","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T11:53:19","slug":"nrlw-news-2026-kennedy-cherrington-defects-from-jillaroos-to-kiwi-ferns-rugby-league-world-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/710297\/","title":{"rendered":"NRLW news 2026: Kennedy Cherrington defects from Jillaroos to Kiwi Ferns, Rugby League World Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/topic\/australia-women-s-national-rugby-league-team-1n93\" class=\"sc-ezrozd dxCwVA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australia\u2019<\/a>s risk of losing a handful of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/sport\/nrl\/nrlw\" class=\"sc-ezrozd dxCwVA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NRLW<\/a> stars to international rivals has started, with firebrand forward Kennedy Cherrington defecting to New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>It was announced in March that the international tier system would no longer be used in the women\u2019s game, opening the door for players to represent England or New Zealand despite having worn Australia\u2019s colours in the past.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/cd169a5efc9146af6ee6f64741c236535d7a5f85798f134247c6f8fd11a34768.jpeg\"  width=\"100%\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"_0b53bae146db0b62 _7475dd3391ee1518\" style=\"--text-color:var(--color-text-secondary)\">Kennedy Cherrington represented the Jillaroos six times.\u00a0X\/@kcherrington99<\/p>\n<p>It came after an NRL-enforced rule change that also allowed players to represent New Zealand or England but still play <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/sport\/nrl\/state-of-origin\" class=\"sc-ezrozd dxCwVA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">State of Origin<\/a>, if they met the criteria, which has already seen the likes of Kalyn Ponga, Addin Fonua-Blake, Victor Radley and Briton Nikora become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/sport\/nrl\/state-of-origin-2027-new-zealand-game-confirmed-auckland-nsw-blues-vs-queensland-maroons-20260216-p5o2j6.html\" class=\"sc-ezrozd dxCwVA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">available to represent different parts of their heritage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Maroons prop Shannon Mato was the first female player to change under the new ruling, with Cherrington now joining her former Jillaroos teammate.<\/p>\n<p>Mato and Cherrington\u2019s decision is a major coup for the Ferns leading into the 2026 Rugby League World Cup, but the decision to part ways with the Australian jersey wasn\u2019t easy for Cherrington.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been sitting on my mind for about two years now to make this switch,\u201d she told NRL.com on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did inquire about how someone would change because I just felt like I would really love to don the black jersey but it was a really hard process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is just about connecting with who I am, and I think the rules have worked for players like me. At the forefront of this decision is my culture, my family and where I come from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy has been representing Australia since she was a teenager playing rugby sevens. In 2020, she made the switch to the NRLW where she started playing with the Roosters.<\/p>\n<p>Cherrington still has fond memories of donning the green and gold jersey back in 2022 for the Rugby League World Cup &#8211; but it was the moments where she stood and watched as the Ferns performed the haka that left her conflicted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe haka, when the Ferns challenge you, it asked questions of myself,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was like my heart was calling for that side, but my heart belongs on this side, as well.
