Canada<\/a> needed a vibe shift. They got it.<\/p>\n

Les Rouges played to a rain-soaked, 2-0 victory<\/a> over 2026 FIFA World Cup<\/a>-bound Uzbekistan in Edmonton on Monday night as\u00a0Austin FC<\/a> winger Jayden Nelson<\/a>, not on the 26-man World Cup roster<\/a> but contending for a spot, scored the insurance goal after Toronto FC<\/a> midfielder Jonathan Osorio<\/a> opened the scoring in his 90th appearance for his country.<\/p>\n

For Nelson, who hyped up the crowd of over 46,000 at Commonwealth Stadium, it was pivotal. After Canada<\/a> learned the disheartening news of skillful midfielder Marcelo Flores\u2019 ACL injury during the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup<\/a> final on Saturday, Nelson knew he was playing for his World Cup<\/a> dream.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to take this game in to see overall fitness and form from everyone. I thought that both Ralph Priso<\/a> and Jayden Nelson<\/a> delivered very good performances,\u201d head coach Jesse Marsch told reporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we have a really good squad, like a really good team, and we’re excited.\u201d<\/p>\n

Revving the engine<\/p>\n

When Canada<\/a> unveiled their starting lineup, it looked as if it could be the team that starts the World Cup<\/a> opener in Toronto on June 12 against Bosnia and Herzegovina.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Though after 45 minutes on Monday, there were more questions than answers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Center back Mo\u00efse Bombito, returning after over 200 days off from a broken leg, limped off after 30 minutes, but will be okay. Yet, the seemingly first-choice lineup struggled to create any attacking or transitional moments.<\/p>\n

With two changes around the half-hour mark and another seven at halftime, the mood shifted.<\/p>\n

Suddenly, Canada<\/a> had vigor back in Marsch\u2019s high-tempo \u201cMaplepressing\u201d tactic, and each of Osorio, former Minnesota United FC<\/a> striker Tani Oluwaseyi and Promise David \u2013 in his return from hip surgery in February \u2013 stood out.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere had been a lot of talk about how we haven’t scored goals from the run out of play, understandably, because we hadn’t, but I kept saying the goals are coming, because I know that we have a lot of firepower,\u201d Marsch said post-match, with Canada<\/a> scoring from the run of play for the first time in three matches.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most important thing is keeping clean sheets and preventing opponents from getting goals, and the more that we do that, I believe that we have enough firepower and we have enough talent to get results.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clean sheet<\/p>\n

At the back, 20-year-old center back Luc de Fougerolles showed his potential to battle for a starting spot as well, while off-roster Priso impressed in an unfamiliar left back position.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The second half was composed, energetic and looked like the Canada<\/a> that so many expect to see under Marsch\u2019s tutelage, just with a different group of players than many had thought of.<\/p>\n

And chief among them were Nelson and Priso, both pushing to claim that final roster spot, having tagged along with the rest of the group for the purpose of managing minutes for a team nursing upwards of nine injuries throughout the squad.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAs much as it’s been about the injuries, and I understand why, you can see there’s also a lot of guys performing at a high level right now,\u201d added Marsch. \u201cGuys look fit, guys look sharp, our guys are playing fast and quick and ready to react.\u201d<\/p>\n

Goalkeeper decided?<\/p>\n

Orlando City<\/a>\u2019s Maxime Cr\u00e9peau<\/a> couldn\u2019t help but flash a smirk when speaking to TSN after the match. The veteran goalkeeper, who missed out on the 2022 World Cup<\/a> due to a broken leg in LAFC<\/a>\u2019s MLS Cup presented by Audi win, provided outstanding moments during the first half.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Entrenched in a year-long battle with Inter Miami CF<\/a>\u2019s Dayne St. Clair<\/a> for Canada\u2019s starting role at the home World Cup<\/a>, Cr\u00e9peau might have done enough to claim the spot on Monday. He made two breakaway saves in the first half before making way for St. Clair at halftime.<\/p>\n

Marsch said he\u2019ll make his choice this week ahead of Friday\u2019s match against Ireland at\u00a0CF Montr\u00e9al<\/a>\u2019s Stade Saputo, where Cr\u00e9peau began his professional career.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes you have to be high risk, high reward,\u201d Cr\u00e9peau said of playing behind Canada\u2019s aggressive system and making breakaway stops. \u201cSometimes because you’re far out in the net, and it’s the style of football that we play, it’s great.<\/p>\n

“… We\u2019ll see about Montr\u00e9al; I was born and raised there and have family, friends and everybody there. I\u2019m very excited for the next couple of days.\u201d<\/p>\n

Davies arrives<\/p>\n

Adding to the positives in Edmonton, Alphonso Davies<\/a> joined the team on Monday, and after introducing himself to the group as a rostered player for the first time since March 2025, the Vancouver Whitecaps FC<\/a> homegrown product ran laps on the pitch pre-match.<\/p>\n

Just 90 minutes against Ireland now separate Canada<\/a> from the World Cup<\/a> opener. Davies won\u2019t be in that matchday squad, likely ruled out as he recovers from a hamstring strain. Yet, the Bayern Munich<\/a> star serves a new role by providing inspiration.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a race between the clock and Davies\u2019 progression. He stands a chance of playing on June 18 against Qatar in Vancouver, but Canada<\/a> know the longer they\u2019re in the tournament, the better chance he has at making an impact.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m happy to be home, and I’m happy to be with the boys, and to support them whether it’s just on or off the pitch,\u201d Davies said after the game in his hometown of Edmonton, despite watching from the stands.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone [at the World Cup] is fighting for the same goal. But for us as a team, we\u2019re focusing on what’s ahead and what’s in front of us at this moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
