The Athletic estimates that the Washington Capitals were the first team to do this, with players\u2019 partners wearing matching denim jackets with player numbers and patches. Over the seasons, the jackets have become more ornate and more professional looking. That has required a more professional hand, rather than just team spirit and an evening of craftiness.<\/p>\n
When the Philadelphia Flyers punched their ticket to the playoffs after beating the Carolina Hurricanes, Flyers defenseman Travis Sanheim fired off a text to his wife, Alex.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re in! Let\u2019s go! Buy the jackets lol\u201d<\/p>\n
The design: a leather jacket with \u201cPhiladelphia Flyers\u201d embroidered on the back in orange above a white number corresponding with the player. There was also a subtle front chest design and each player\u2019s initials embroidered on the front.<\/p>\n
This was simply a job for the pros, and it needed to be done in time for the Flyers\u2019 first-round bout against the Pittsburgh Penguins, so the group went to Philly-based RushOrderTees.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were glad to do the work,\u201d said Josh Hannum, vice president of sales for RushOrderTees. \u201cThe Flyers\u2019 partners had a clear vision and a short clock. We were proud the jackets were ready in time for the first home game.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sports memorabilia has evolved quite a bit beyond the basic T-shirt or replica jersey. Franchises and leagues now have entire lines that replicate streetwear drops or high fashion releases, appealing to everyone on the sports fan spectrum. Creating a high-end and luxury look, even for something as casual as a sporting event or team, resonates with the end-user and they feel they have something even more special and valuable.<\/p>\n
The WAG jacket phenomenon underscores the importance of customization, even when something is reflective of a uniform. Beyond sports, it shows how events or exciting seasons can be commemorated through merchandise and personalized to make the recipient feel like it was made just for them, and that they are part of the action and excitement.<\/p>\n
Add to that the fact that decorators and suppliers like RushOrderTees had to work in a hurry, and it\u2019s a story that most promo pros are familiar with: very specific instructions and a delivery date right around the corner that can\u2019t budge.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt sounds silly, but if you\u2019re designing custom jackets, this is the bigs,\u201d Jordi Lutsky, who designed and produced the jackets for the Ottawa Senators this year and last year, told The Athletic. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t get bigger than playoff jackets for the NHL if you\u2019re a jacket designer.\u201d<\/p>\n
For distributors, whether in sports or not, a promo product can become iconic and memorable when it feels original \u2013 and is delivered before the buzzer sounds.<\/p>\n
