Mandurah Art Gallery has become a hub for contemporary printmaking as artists, educators, students and audiences from across WA gather for the Marginalia Exhibition.<\/p>\n

The exhibition in the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre is presented by Peel Printmaking in partnership with the Printmakers Association of WA.<\/p>\n

With fourteen printmakers selected to exhibit, it aims to showcase the diversity of printmaking across WA and foster dialogue and professional exchange between newly arrived, regional and metropolitan artists.<\/p>\n

Marginalia project lead and Peel Printmaking co-founder Joanne Wood said Mandurah was an ideal location for the exhibition because of its position on the very edge of Perth, both geographically and culturally.<\/p>\n

\u201cNeither fully metropolitan nor entirely regional, Mandurah operates as a threshold space where different communities, audiences, and artistic conversations intersect,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHosting Marginalia here reinforces the exhibition\u2019s focus on practices that exist outside dominant centres, while allowing the work to be encountered by audiences who may be overlooked by inner-city institutional circuits.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ms Wood said the term Marginalia referred to notes, drawings and symbols written in the margins of books.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe term comes from the Latin marginalis, meaning \u2018of the edge\u2019 added glosses, commentary, corrections, and playful illustrations,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, marginalia have taken on a broader symbolic meaning beyond notes in books. It represents ideas, voices, and practices that exist outside the mainstream \u2014those at the \u2018edge\u2019 of dominant culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

The exhibition was opened last Friday and accompanied by a symposium on Saturday, supported by the City of Mandurah and held at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.<\/p>\n

The symposium featured a keynote presentation by UWA\u2019s Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery curator Lee Kinsella, artist talks and a chaired panel discussion moderated by artist and UWA fine arts lecturer Andy Quilty.<\/p>\n

The program explored contemporary printmaking practice, material processes and working at the margins.<\/p>\n

The exhibition will run until June 26 at Alcoa Mandurah Art Gallery and Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.
