{"id":711838,"date":"2026-06-03T04:39:17","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T04:39:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/711838\/"},"modified":"2026-06-03T04:39:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T04:39:17","slug":"sydney-academic-used-ai-to-write-smh-opinion-piece-urging-students-to-avoid-using-tech-to-cut-corners-australian-universities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/711838\/","title":{"rendered":"Sydney academic used AI to write SMH opinion piece urging students to avoid using tech to \u2018cut corners\u2019 | Australian universities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A top Sydney academic used AI to write an opinion piece that urged students to \u201cdo the work\u201d and not cut corners by using such technology, with the Sydney Morning Herald removing the \u201cunacceptable\u201d piece from its website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Western Sydney University\u2019s pro vice-chancellor for quality and integrity, Prof Cath Ellis, had an opinion piece published in the Sydney Morning Herald last month, in response to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/i-m-an-academic-but-i-ve-told-my-stepdaughter-to-think-twice-about-going-to-university-20260525-p600ix.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an article from the academic Kylie Moore-Gilbert<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Moore-Gilbert had written that she had advised her stepdaughter to think twice before enrolling in university as students could easily outsource their learning to AI, saying students were \u201cbeing graded on who can write the best AI prompts\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In response, Ellis wrote in her piece that the \u201cAI problem is real\u201d, but students should still go to university and study properly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cDon\u2019t cut corners. Don\u2019t outsource your thinking, however tempting that may be. If the system is as fragile as some claim, then genuine effort will not be hidden. It will stand out,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">However, the column, when submitted to AI-detector service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pangram.com\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pangram<\/a>, came up as AI-generated.<\/p>\n<p><a data-link-name=\"standard link button Primary\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" class=\"dcr-svb9qg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for the Breaking News Australia email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In response to questions from Guardian Australia, the university said Ellis had used AI in writing the column.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cTo write her opinion article, Prof. Ellis uploaded 40,000 words of her own original materials into a Copilot Large Language Model (LLM). The model summarised her extensive base of knowledge, providing prompts,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis was the basis of the early drafts, reflecting Prof. Ellis\u2019s own thinking, ideas and opinions built up over more than a decade of dedicated work as a global leader in this field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The spokesperson said the use of an LLM to draw on her own expertise and experience \u201cdemonstrates a sophisticated and appropriate use\u201d of generative AI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cPrograms like Pangram can detect AI use, but they cannot determine whether that use was appropriate or inappropriate,\u201d the spokesperson said. \u201cThe University believes the AI use in this case was appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Ellis\u2019s opinion piece did not declare the use of generative AI to write the article as of Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The editorial policy for Nine, parent company of the Sydney Morning Herald, allows writers to use AI for initial research and prompt ideas but states: \u201cAI will not be used to write stories for publication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The policy states where AI-generated material is published, it will be clearly labelled, but says \u201cthe use of assistive AI does not require declaration\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Nine did not respond to questions from Guardian Australia. But in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/uni-academic-admits-she-used-ai-to-write-opinion-piece-in-defence-of-ai-20260602-p6038j.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a subsequent article published on Wednesday<\/a>, the Sydney Morning Herald\u2019s editor, Jordan Baker, said the article did not meet its editorial guidelines and had been removed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe Herald was not informed of the use of AI in the compilation of the article by either the author or Western Sydney University,\u201d Baker said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cClearly this is unacceptable and we are investigating further.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">As generative AI tools become more embedded in workplaces across the globe, incidents of media outlets publishing output from AI without disclosure are becoming more common.
