Underworld figure Mick Gatto and a woman have been arrested by Victoria Police as part of its ongoing investigation into corruption and underworld infiltration into the building industry.<\/p>\n
\u201cDetectives from Taskforce Hawk executed a warrant at a Mount Martha property this morning as part of a current investigation into alleged financial offences,\u201d police said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo people at the address, a man and a woman both in their 70s, were arrested and are being interviewed by police. Further information will be released later today.\u201d<\/p>\n
Taskforce Hawk was set up to probe criminal behaviour in the construction sector in response to reporting by this masthead.<\/p>\n
Related In his report, tabled in Queensland\u2019s Commission of Inquiry into the CFMEU, Geoffrey Watson, SC, outlined what he called the \u201cGatto extortion model\u201d, which involved demanding payment from contractors to avoid industrial strife.<\/p>\n Watson accused Gatto of successfully running a \u201cterror campaign\u201d that he estimated would net the gangland figure millions of dollars a year.<\/p>\n Watson\u2019s report also backed revelations by this masthead that Australian Federal Police were investigating \u2013 and in March 2025 had raided<\/a> \u2013 accountant Charles Pellegrino over payments from a number of contractors as part of a probe into a suspected criminal conspiracy to give or receive \u201ccorrupting benefits\u201d to influence union officials.<\/p>\n On February 18, Gatto denied allegations in a report by Watson that he had \u201cdamaged the building industry and damaged the Victorian economy \u2013 maybe permanently\u201d as a result of his work as a self-styled mediator and arbitrator between the CFMEU and construction firms.<\/p>\n \u201cUnfortunately, they\u2019re looking for a scapegoat, and I refuse to be one,\u201d Gatto said on 3AW at the time.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve been down this track the last 30 or 40, years, you know: They\u2019ve tried to do it in different royal commissions that they\u2019ve had \u2013 nothing\u2019s come out of them.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019ve rendered me a standover man with no evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n Gatto filed defamation proceedings<\/a> against Watson earlier this year in the NSW Supreme Court over accusations that he was a \u201cmurderous member of the mafia\u201d in a segment on Nine\u2019s 60 Minutes.<\/p>\n Paul Svilans, a lawyer who has acted for Gatto, had no comment when contacted today.<\/p>\n This masthead was unable to reach Gatto when contacting him for comment.<\/p>\n On Wednesday, 3AW host Jacqui Felgate said the two arrested were Gatto and his wife.<\/p>\n \u201cMick Gatto was actually taken into custody by these detectives last night, and was brought back to his house in a police van with his wife,\u201d Felgate said.<\/p>\n \u201cPolice are still at scene, they have been taking boxes, I think there are about six cars there at the moment, and they have been taking boxes in and out of the property all day.\u201d<\/p>\n More to come.<\/p>\n Save<\/p>\n You have reached your maximum number of saved items.<\/p>\n Remove items from your saved list<\/a> to add more.<\/p>\n![\"](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1f59f809f7bc05d5f97b919d81699a5fec42b6fd.jpeg\")
