\n A new study reveals that women with a history of primary infertility undergo natural menopause an average of one year earlier than those without fertility struggles, with heightened risks tied to unexplained infertility and endometriosis<\/p>\n

Published online in the journal Menopause, the statistical analysis indicates that women diagnosed with primary infertility, specifically those experiencing unexplained infertility or endometriosis, face a significantly higher risk of entering early menopause.<\/a><\/p>\n

Given that the average woman spends more than one-third of her life post-menopause,<\/a> understanding the timelines and risk factors of this transition is vital for long-term health management.<\/p>\n

While previous research explored potential connections between fertility struggles and the onset of menopause, those studies yielded mixed conclusions and failed to categorise data by distinct types of infertility.<\/p>\n

Key findings and statistical deviations<\/p>\n

The study evaluated a longitudinal cohort of nearly 700 participants, roughly half of whom had a confirmed clinical diagnosis of primary infertility. The data revealed two primary trends regarding the age of natural menopausal<\/a> onset:<\/p>\n

Accelerated onset:<\/p>\n

Women with a documented history of primary infertility underwent natural menopause collectively one year earlier than the control group of women without a history of infertility.<\/p>\n

Early menopause vulnerability:<\/p>\n

Participants whose infertility was categorised as \u201cunexplained\u201d or directly caused by endometriosis exhibited a starkly elevated risk of early menopause, which is clinically defined as occurring before the age of 45.<\/p>\n

Notably, the researchers found no statistically significant correlation between a history of primary infertility and premature menopause, which refers to the cessation of menstrual cycles before the age of 40.<\/p>\n

Systemic health implications and clinical recommendations<\/p>\n

The timing of menopause is an essential marker for a woman\u2019s systemic health trajectory. Premature and early menopause<\/a> are major clinical concerns because extended deprivation of estrogen is heavily associated with severe, long-term health complications, including accelerated osteoporosis, neurocognitive disorders, and cardiovascular disease.<\/p>\n

The study contrasts known risk factors that accelerate menopause\u2014such as tobacco use, a low body mass index (BMI), early menarche (the age of a first period), and nulliparity (never giving birth)\u2014against factors linked to a later menopausal onset, such as increased parity (multiple childbirths) and a history of oral contraceptive use.<\/p>\n

Because infertility is a widespread global condition affecting one in six people and is already associated with elevated baseline rates of cardiovascular disease and certain cancers, these new findings emphasise the need for proactive medical oversight.<\/p>\n

Dr Stephanie Faubion, Medical Director for The Menopause Society, noted that identifying these specific sub-groups of at-risk women will allow clinicians to offer targeted preventative counselling.<\/p>\n
