(ABC News: Emily Smith)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Disappointed, angry, frustrated,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s been a slow process over a 10-year period that gradually reduced our workforce.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When volume keeps getting stripped away, it makes it a really challenging place to keep open.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Aware of the pressures facing the company, Mr Hinds said Launceston staff had worked tirelessly in recent years to be as efficient as possible.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-06-02\/tas-boags-ends-tasmanian-production\/106748810\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Boag&#8217;s to cease beer production in Tasmania<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The famed northern Tasmanian brewer announces it will cease production in the state by November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">He never thought the &#8220;Tasmanian icon&#8221; would shut its doors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;For us to work that hard to keep this place open and then for them just to close the doors was very disappointing news,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The 53-year-old said he did not know what his future held beyond November.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I haven&#8217;t looked for a job for over 20 years,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t want to leave Launceston.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Brewery, Hawks to leave city<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">On top of the impact on workers and their families, the loss of Boag&#8217;s is a blow for the region&#8217;s tourism industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Brewery tours have long been one of Launceston&#8217;s major tourist drawcards.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-05-20\/hawthorn-football-club-relationship-northern-tasmania-afl\/106695958\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Devils must deliver after booting Hawks out of Tasmania<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Having just played a key role in evicting what has been a model tenant for 25 years, the Devils must now deliver on the economic and social boon they&#8217;ve promised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Last month, Hawthorn Football Club announced it had been forced to &#8220;transition out&#8221; of the state ahead of the Tasmania Devils&#8217; AFL entry in 2028.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Hawks have played &#8220;home&#8221; games in Launceston since 2001.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Local councillor and business owner Alex Britton said the dual departure of both Boag&#8217;s and the Hawks could cost the city more than $50 million a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a million dollars a week. (Facebook: James Boag Brewery Experience)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Launceston Chamber of Commerce chief executive Alina Bain said Boag&#8217;s departure would be a focal point of a member event on the city&#8217;s economic future being held next week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;First and foremost is the 42 people who work for Boag&#8217;s and how we as a business community can support them,&#8221; Ms Bain said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The second point is businesses in the supply chain, and understanding the impacts on them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The third topic is what are the plans from Boag&#8217;s, as owner of that site, and what role can we as businesses, and our civic leaders, play in influencing the sale and or development of that site?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Options for &#8216;prominent&#8217; site<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Overlooking the North Esk River, the Boag&#8217;s brewery is in a &#8220;very prominent position&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ms Bain said there was a &#8220;high level of emotional attachment&#8221; to the building in the state&#8217;s north.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a beautiful heritage site and it&#8217;s really important that people in Launceston have a say in how that site is developed \u2026 there is some interest in that,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Would that be a good location for a conference centre? Would it be a good location for a hotel? How about we gather some microbreweries together?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Can it be used for accommodation, for inner city living, for housing, commercial office space?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Northern Tasmanian developer Errol Stewart said properly revitalising the Boag&#8217;s site would require &#8220;plenty of courage and plenty of energy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s probably going to be a 10-year program and it&#8217;s probably going to involve a hundred million dollars,&#8221; Mr Stewart told ABC Northern Drive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The government has got to sit down with council and some developers, whoever that might be.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;d be happy to be involved, but it&#8217;s a big commitment, no matter who does it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said the council had various &#8220;levers to pull&#8221; regarding zoning for the site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Tasmanian government on Wednesday announced it would be reinvesting the $1 million returned by Lion &#8220;directly into the future of Launceston and Northern Tasmania&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Esk river showing rear of Boags Brewery Launceston\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/c8099018d64b94948a8d0fb0374a4c03.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The Boag&#8217;s brewery backs on to Launceston&#8217;s Esk River.
